Sr year. AP stats or AP calc?

Which math is better for undecided major who is a very strong math student? Current precalc avg is 97. She was going to take both but not sure she wants 2 math classes.

AP calc is the better class for a strong math student.

AP Calc.

No question, AP Calc BC, for strong Math students.
At our school, those who are not strong in math, take AP Stats to fulfill the 4 year Math requirement.

you do you don’t have to take AB first? What is the difference between AB and BC?

Loosely, think of AB as Calc 1 and BC as Calc 2.

Some high schools divide up their math sequence such that students take AB and then BC, in separate, sequential years. For these high schools, AB is a prerequisite to BC.

Other high schools teach BC in a single year that includes the AB material. Students at these high schools may have the option to choose AB (slower, less material) or BC (faster, more material).

As others have said, AP Calc AB would be better.

If she is strong in math and motivated to do so, it is possible to take them both. My senior is taking AP Stats and AP Calc BC right now and doing well in both. He took AB Calc last year.

I am not sure how much difference it makes to do so during the senior year, however, since UF will not have any results when reviewing the application and SSAR.

@fl1234 we called UF and asked this question specifically 2 weeks ago… what they said is they do not and are not able to get that granular on the class… what they look at, is it an AP Math class… they only look at that. they specifically said they are not able to look at a micro level. they would never get done with the applications… as far as he was concerned, the 2 classes are equal for their consideration of the senior class rigor

@jhmoney so, would taking them both be seen as better than one or the other? They would notice that, right?

The question then is, how much difference does taking both make? My guess is not that much.

@fl1234 taking both wouldn’t do much other than taking another rigorous class which is always good. as far as them getting granular, they told me they do not and cant on every application… they just know she took 2 top level maths/ classes in general… this is what they told me at least… so my daughter ended up doing AP STATS not Calc. she would have never done both… we were just concerned with did Calc look better… he said no

AP Calc is looked upon more favorably at schools that scrutinize these things. Some schools don’t care.
