Can anyone who has had experience with the SSA scholarships or knows a fair amount about the process explain to me what the chances to get one are(i.e selectivity)?
I am a direct admit to the Kelley School of Business, OOS. I am not a URM. Is it even worth it at this point? It seems that the only scholarship I could possibly get is the Hudson Scholars one–but even that one, according to the website is geared towards “underrepresented populations, but other applicants are considered and encouraged to apply.”
I have a maximum deans scholarship and will be filing a FAFSA application as well.
From what I’ve read, there aren’t a lot of SSA’s that go out so you would have to determine if you feel its worth your time to fill out at this point. I think the revised deadline is now Jan. 4th to complete the app but LOR’s need to be in by the 17th.
I can’t speak for Kelly but I know for Direct Admits to the School of Education, they use the SSA app for the School of Ed scholarships so for my D, it was worth it to us to complete due to that fact. That was indicated to us in her SSA welcome letter and also asked that she focus her essay where possible on her teaching aspirations.
I don’t know the importance of getting them in sooner but this summer we attended a day at IU put on by the office of scholarships and they stressed filling these out as soon as possible to maximize awards. Not sure if there is a first in first out type of system for qualified applicants but that was what it almost sounded like.
They way I look at it, if you have the ability to apply, I would submit because you never know what may happen. Any little amount helps if you can get it.
