Anyone know what the deal is with these SSA’s? Anybody know about how many applicants get money from them and what the average amount is? Seems like an awful lot of work (mini research paper, with resources cited), among other things): are they worth the effort, particularly for OOS? Think D can just use the same references from the Common App?
I was wondering the same thing…seems very time consuming
I had a 34 ACT and 4.4 GPA and got nothing from the SSA. I think around 25% of SSA applicants get a Hutton scholarship. I don’t have anything to back that up, but I believe they said that in the letter they sent me when I didn’t get one.
My D just submitted her app two weeks ago. I think the percentage of people getting them is low however, the app is also shared with the School of Education which is her intended major so the same app is used for the Ed. scholarships which she may have a better chance at even if only a small amount.
Wow: thanks for the info. Not really sure if it’s worth the effort…
Last year my son got a $6000/ per year SSA scholarship. He also got the 11K scholarship when he was admitted. He had a 34 ACT, and a 3.9 GPA. He had friends with a 32 Act and a 3.8 who also received it. I think if the quality of the paper is good, you submit early, and you have good grades and ACT/SAT scores, you will get something. The way I see it, is even if you get 3k a year, that is 12k, at 6k a year that is 24k. Well worth the effort to write the paper.
Out of curiosity, for people who received invites to apply for the SSA’s did you also get either the Provost or Dean’s scholarship? My D did get an invite for SSA but we haven’t received anything about the Provost (In-State). It would seem like if she had good enough stats to be invited to apply for SSA’s that she would have also qualified for something on the Provost, even if only the minimum. How IU does the merit scholarships is baffling to us.
She was accepted on Oct. 11th and other than the invite for the SSA she’s not received anything about Provost.
@dcolosi I applied for the SSA’s and also received a Provost. I was also accepted around the same time as your D- hopefully your letter just got lost in the mail! My scholarship offer came in a red checkered envelope a few weeks after admission.
Does IU take into account weighted GPA? My unweighted is 3.7, weighted 4.5
@sgw2021 They will take the highest GPA reported on your transcript.
If you were awarded either the Provost or Dean’s does it show up anywhere on your portal? We thought perhaps a letter was lost in the mail but then we thought if it was awarded we might see it on the portal along with all the other information around her acceptance and SSA to do items.
@dcolosi I have not been able to find my award anywhere on my portal- I would guess that they upload all of that information post-FAFSA decisions though!
@bklyngal Do you know how much submitting it early matters that much??
