So I am taking the SSAT next month. I took one last year to see what I would get and it was overall 65. The verbal was the worst then the reading and the math was 80. I NEED a 90 this year especially for the vocab. What words should I study? Does the princeton review actually really help? Any tips for reading? any tips for math? Thanks so much

Hi there! I’m primarily an SAT tutor, but I’m well versed in the SSAT as well, and the verbal is indeed VERY heavy vocabulary oriented. I’m assuming you’re taking the upper level test. Anyway, the best vocabulary resource I recommend to my SAT students is word-nerd.com - it is designed for the SAT, but vocabulary is vocabulary so you might check it out. Some folks recommend a book called direct hits, too, so that might be an option as well. Best of luck!

I’m taking it next month too! October 17? And yes princeton review really does help. I have the 2008 edition but there’s a 2010 edition now. It’ll have all the tips you need…
I also have this [Amazon.com: Vocabulary Cartoons: SAT Word Power (9780965242233): Sam Burchers: Books](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0965242234/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0965242285&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1PV42TDYAPV7XKC11GVZ)
It’s working for me. I really hope it helps though. It doesn’t say it’s special for the SSAT, but for SAT and a lot of other tests.

Thank you so much that really helps!! Yep I am taking t October 17 good luck to you and me hopefully we both will get high scores! Do you guys have any tips on reading I got a pretty low score on that! Math I think I can get a 90 since I got like two books for it.

I’m afraid the best preparation for the reading is just doing more reading, and reading critically. Most of the questions ask you to make inferences from the information in the passage. So, the answer is there, but you need to read between the lines to get it. And unfortunately, there are some questions which require you to have general outside knowledge. And those, there’s just not a good way to prep for. As a general rule, I’d read the passage first quickly, just to get the basic idea. You’re really going to have to refer back to the passage to answer the questions anyway, so don’t read closely the first time. An SAT strategy that might also be helpful is skimming the questions first before doing any reading. That way, you know what to look for in the passage.

Hope that helps, and that you’re making some progress with vocab, too.
