SSAT January 5th

Hello I am a current applicant to the HADES schools and I am taking the test saturday. I took the practice test and I got good scores on everything except for the vocal. I keep searching and searching for words but all of them have bad reviews. Is their any way that I can improve my vocab by saturday? PLEASE!, I really want a good score

Don’t stress too much about it… I had a poor score on my verbal section but I still pulled a 96% out of it because I aced math and reading. As long as you’re at least ok in verbal but great in the other two you will be fine. Don’t worry!

Do not stress. You cant just magically obtain a vast vocabulary. It has to be worked at its like an aquired taste. Other than that you should hope that your prior ventures have served you well enough to provide a distinguished form of written giftedness but if you have been studying hope that your other scores supercede your vocabulary.
Goodluck

I’m taking it this Saturday, too. I would recommend studying word roots, because since it is impossible to memorize every word that could possibly be on the SSAT, knowing word roots could help you deduce an accurate definition. The Princeton Review prep books have a very good section on this which I am using to study, but you could probably find a list of of word roots online. It helps when you make flash cards to try to come up with a word that comes from that root on your own, because that can help you to remember the definition of the root more easily and earn a greater understanding of what it means and how it is used. Good luck!

I took it today-- I went through 4 SSAT books thoroughly, but ouch. This one was hard, probably because of winter break and how it’s affected my sleep. >.<

I took it today too. I think I did good on every section except for the synonyms part. I studied root words too, but to be honest, it didn’t help. I’m hoping I get 80th percentile or above so I can get into some of the more selective schools

Yep, I’m pretty sure I failed the vocabulary. Plus not emlnough time to finish second math section , the reading was hard too. So much for having a 4.0 GPA. I’m never getting into a HADSES school. :’(

I took it today, too. REALLY hard compared to all the practice tests I’ve taken and last year’s test. Anyone else surprised by having a choice of essay questions?

It seems like the majority of the test takers had a hard time, but maybe I’m wrong. Don’t be too disappointed though, because your score might turn out really well. This was the first time I took it, so I don’t know much about the essays, but I chose the second one

If most of people had a lower score than in other SSAT tests, will the percentile be higher than usual? e.g just an example 700 is 85 percent normally, but this time may a 600 be an 85 percent.

Yes, definitely. I think they grade on a curve or something, because the percentile is in your age group. So it depends on if everybody did bad or less than average.
The sad part is that the only section I thought was “easy” per say was the experimental section.
Yes, the vocab was really hard too! The ninth graders& tenth graders I sat next to were having a really tough time.
I really am hoping for 90+ percentile. I worked REALLY hard.

I heard that Andover will allow applicants to take the February test. I took the SSAT last month and the verbal was by far the hardest section. I would recommend to myself and others that after memorizing a good amount of words to start memorizing Latin and Greek roots. One excersize i did was look at the words I already knew and then try to identify the roots.

Andover, Exeter and these kind of schools allow you to take the february test? because this one…

The analogies were difficult. I don’t think too many people know that a Hereford is a type of cattle…

Yep Ai had no idea what a Hereford was.

Omg that’s what hereford was !!! I was to busy trying to figure out how aesthetic was related to beauty :(

I skipped the majority of the analogies…

I do not like the Analogies section of the SSAT. I feel that is the only section of the exam that is geared to benefit those in a higher social econmic class.

My daughter was stumped by the STEAK is to NOVEL one… :-)

Some of the questions are different. But funny thing about the Hereford, my grandpa was a diary farmer ahaha

I hope i did well this time haha, i’ve been working for a year on this stuff =/
