SSAT Prep

eklektist, do you think I have a chance at learning all those new words?

Man, those analogies are really tough.

How much should I know for the UL Verbal? The math and reading a pretty easy... and I thought those would be the toughest. I'm going into eighth grade, so how much will I be expected to know?

I'm afraid to take the UL Practice test. I don't want to score like a 65% or something. ahhh.

The Princeton Review book helped me a lot, though. I'm glad I bought it whether I do well on the SSAT or not. I learned a lot from it.

Does anyone have any test taking tips or learning techniques? I'm probably going to take it in the fall.

Okay. Math is super easy and just find some flash cards online. That's what I did! YAY! and I got 96th percentile overall. I don't remember the rest.

LOOK!

SSAT don't matter THAT MUCH. I think, like someone said already, they're the least imprortant part of the app. They jsut make you take them to see if you're at the level of the school, which I assume you are because you're taking them and applying.

Someone in my dorm (my room mate to be precise) got 86th percentile. ANd I was waitlisted and he got in! (That's becuase I need fin aid and he doensn't. :P) Whereas, this kid I know had a 99th percentile and dint' get in. This other kid who needed fin aid that had a 92 percentile got in before I did. So that proves to me that they don't matter THAT much.

Focus on your essays. DOn't make them pretentious. The Academy knows when you're being pretentious or tryign to impress them. I wrote an essay baout my cats and how I saved them from a hawk and the admissions committee called me up a week after I sent it in the mail, told me it was good, and told me they had a spot for me.

What I think is most important:

INterview (one on one. Cna't hide behind words. I didn't wear a suit or a blazer LOL, it might be a good idea to do so, but don't look liek you think you're btter than everyone else. BE ready to admit that you're mediocre compared to all the students.)
Essays - durrrrr. These tell them who you are
Teacher Recs
Grades
EC's
SSAT

If you were asked to give the definition of a word versus given the word with 4-5 choices, don't you think you would be able to recognize the definition even though you may not be able to give a precise definition. I think so, so when learning defs keep this in mind. Good Luck!

By the way, I think grades, teacher recs, interview, Ec's, SSAT are most important. Maybe interview and recs are equal.

ssat's provide a measure for your grades. for example if you have all a's but go to a random school in nebraska per se where the boarding school isn't familiar with the difficulty of your school then they will use your ssat scores to gauge how hard your school is an how much an a is worth.

you should consider getting a tutor, everyone i knew had one and when i first took the diagnostic test for the tutor i think i got 77%, but when i took the real test i got 96% so it really helped

Teacher recs are VERY important. I know from experience. I applied to a school near my house [private, but not boarding] and gave my current math teacher my rec to fill out [she hated me bcause I corrected her]. I got wait-listed. I late applied to a boarding school in Mass. and used a different math teacher that taught me the previous year [she loved me]. I was accepted.

If there was one thing I learned about the admissions process it was to have outstanding teacher recs.
