I'm wondering if anyone knows where to find a conversion chart on line. The girl I'm tutoring scored in around 680 for each section. (ie, 690 math, 680 reading comp, etc). and she is upset saying those scores are horrible on a percentile basis. But we don't have the charts, so I don't know what those scores mean. She is an 8th grade girl. Any help? Is it a 50% like she thinks or more like a 70%?

thanks

Don't let her base her test results on the percentage. This is the biggest mistake people make. There isn't an exact conversion rate, from her score to a percentile because sometimes the dificulties of the tests differ. So depending on how well people score on the test will depend on the percentile. I don't know the average ratings but if i remember correctly generally if you score 700 or above generally its a 90 plus? Correct me if I am wrong guys

I don't think above 700--a little higher, but not far off. Maybe 720+. Those scores aren't bad, but, like hockeykid said, we really can't give exact percentiles.

I believe she is referring to a practice test, which has no conversion chart. She is merely basing it on a percentile basis meaning that if she answered ten questions out of twenty correctly then she has a fifty. So I belive Abacus had the wrong impression of the question. So again I wouldn't worry.

on the practice test my son took (from the ssat prep book) the median 50% score for 8th grade was 647 reading, 660 verbal and 676 quantitative. So if those are the % scores you are looking for and the tests would be comparable, then it looks like she is scoring just above the 50% mark.

Thanks everyone. And yes, I do understand how the percentiles work, and the reason that we need to know the percentiles is because that is the way the boarding schools consider them. They don't use the raw score, so it's reallybest to think in terms of percentiles.

what happens if i get 2172 out of 2400 and im a grade 8 girl? well. technically im going to grade 8. but yea.

To my knowledge, there is no scale to percentile chart available online anywhere. However, I remember a thread titled “So, I got my ssat scores today” or something like that where a bunch of kids posted both their scaled scores and percentiles. If you can find those, it will give you an idea of where she falls, percentile-wise. If I remember correctly, she should be between 85th and 90th percentile. I don’t remember anyone over 90th with less than 2200 scaled.

dont worry about SSAT’s too much as long as your over 80 percentile your fine, all the scores get rounded off anyway during the admissions process anyway. there only used to see who is academically capable and who is not.

Don’t obsess over percentiles on practice tests, especially tests from non-SSAT providers. Do notice any items you consistently get wrong. If you find questions on figuring out the area of parallelograms, or finding primes, review the relevant subject matter. Use the practice tests to find the areas in your preparation which need work.

What is the average overall grade for and 8th grader? I’m referring to the sums of all the scores.

Thanks ;D

Verbal 663
Math 691
Reading 652
for an avrg grade8 male it comes with your score report

which is 2002 total

According to my SSAT Princeton review book, that tells you the scaled scored and their APPROXIMATE percentiles

A 695 in math would be around a 68% while a 680 would be a 59%
A 680 in reading would be around a 70%
A 680 in verbal would be around a 69%

Again I’m not completely sure on this as they approximate guesstimates based on previous years research. Seriously though, don’t worry about SSATs too much. Depending on the schools you’re applying to, these scores could be the average or above/below it. Check out boardingschoolsreview.com for a semi-accurate SSAT score for schools.

@woowoo20 Again I’m using the conversion chart given in my Princeton review book. As answers above said, there isn’t any set score as all the test differ, but this is what my book says for 8th grade boys.

(I’m using the closest scaled score that I have okay?)
A 665 in verbal is about a 51%
A 695 in math is about a 56% while a 680 is about a 47%
A 650 in reading is about 48%

Oh and just a note a 530 for both genders in 8th grade is said to be a 1%. 90% for girls is about 725 scaled score for each section and up, while for boys it’s 740 scaled score for each section and up.

yeah @prettyckitty, 720+ i think is in the 90’s… i have no idea exact percents tho…

like i took a practice test and got 2244 and i searched online and it was 93%

I took the REAL test and got a 2214 and they said it was a 94%…

CONFUSING
