SSAT Score Question

Hi,

I was wondering which are more important, individual section or total percentile scores?

Scores as follows:

Verbal: 91%
Math: 83%
Reading: 97%
Total: 96%

I noticed on the Andover FAQ that the average applicant last year had a 93% SSAT score. How do adcoms deduce your scores? By their own formula - adding/reducing weight to certain sections - or by the "total percentile" that the SSAT people give out?

I have the grades, LORs, and soft factors in place. Just worried about my scores!

Thanks!

I was informed by two schools - neither of them Andover - that they look at the total percentile score and weigh in the indiv scores. My scores weren't nearly as high as yours - but the schools I've applied for average between the 50th pertile and the 75th percentile. I'm not sure how the Andover/Exeter/Groton, etc. schools make their decisions. Hope that helps.

by the way the average applicant did not have 93%...the average accepted student did.

at my interview with hotchkiss, the admissions officer said that the national percentiles are usually a lot higher than actual scores. they won't be so impressed with high national percentiles, i figured.

your total score is same as mine :) all national percentiles are over 95% for me, and the actual scores are math=99 verbal=around 87 i can't remember, and reading=about 94. he said these scores are really good. i'm also applying for andover, so maybe i'll see ya!! :)

Don't worry about how the scores are added up I doubt there is any math to it. In all honesty it wouldn't surprise me if they just looked at the total percentage and used that number to compare against other students. You have wonderful scores, however, so don't let that frighten you; SSAT scores are not as important in high school admissions as the SAT is for college apps.

Btw, congratulations on your wonderful score!
