We received our kids' SSAT scores and its a moot point now because we're not moving schools, but what would a good score be? I must be thick but I can't make heads or tails out of these scores. Would an 89% be good and a 53% be pretty bad? Any help most appreciated!

The number basially shows the percentage of students taking the test scored below you (or you scored above), so 53% is just above average. I would say it’s pretty bad if you apply for the top schools. One site (not sure how dependable it is) says the average SSAT for Andover is 94%, so go figure.

For top schools 53th percentile is very uncommon. I know nhfootballer’s story, and I think he got 55th. But he was an ethnic minority (native american or black, don’t remember) and was a highly-regarded football player.

I THINK he got accepted to the majority of schools he applied to (EADSCH?)… you should ask him.

89th is excellent. It isn’t out of this world, but, given your ‘strong’ in other areas, than it is MORE than acceptable.
