Could I get into loomis and deerfield with around an overall 75%? for Deerfield I play Bass Clarinet and they need one and my cousin and dad went there and my brother goes there now. And could you have two really high scores but one bad score and still get in?
What were your brother’s stats when he applied ?
You need FA and you won’t be the only legacy or sib who needs FA . If you apply with an overall 75% , Deerfield is a huge reach- even with legacy and sib status. Your alum dad has to know this- what does he say?
Why are you setting such a low bar for yourself if you haven’t taken the SSAT yet? Or, have you and you have a 75%? Which is it? The app deadline for Deerfield is due January 15th. Are you applying to Deerfield with the 75%?
If you are, I would suggest adding new schools to your list if you want to go to BS next year. I’m sorry if that sounds mean but I’m not going to tell you what you want to hear… even if you create yet another thread hoping someone else will.
“If you apply with an overall 75% , Deerfield is a huge reach- even with legacy and sib status.”
I wouldn’t be as discouraging, for a number of reasons. With approximately 86% SSAT median at Deerfield for the entering class, there will be plenty of kids accepted with scores well below 70% SSAT. Likely 20-25% of the class. Also, Deerfield has comparatively few NMSF in 11th grade, and relatively lowish SAT scores, which shows that there are not very many super high scorers there. Last, OP is URM (half-Jamaican), which will also help mitigate any low SSAT score.
I’m not saying OP will get in, he would have to have what the school is looking for, but legacy + URM means that 75% SSAT won’t be a problem at all.
Discouraging someone and being realistic are two different things. Trust me- if his dad is a Deerfield alum he knows and I would venture to guess that’s why OP has blessed us with five threads. I would rather tell a kid needing FA to be strategic and branch out while there’s still time than tell him that he’ll sail in with legacy/ sib status +URM when I know that won’t be the case.
I hear you @SatchelSF … but look at his stats and look at the schools he’s applying to. I wish him all the luck in the world ( I really do ) but all the schools on that list are an uphill slog with a 75%.
i’m also applying to loomis and thats not my final score just guessing
What does OP mean
also satchel you haven’t seen my other thread it shows all my extracurricular then you could see if you have a final decision
I hear you photographer mom but I’m just assuming the worse if it happens i took the December 9th test and i’m taking one in January and my dad also says if i dont get an 80 i probably wont apply to the school.
Your dad is correct. You have to get to 80 for DA.
I wish you all the luck in the world and sincerely hope that the second time around is the charm. Fingers crossed. You can do this.
THANK YOU SOO MUCH IT ACTUALLY MEANS A TON THAT SOMEONE FINALLY SAID THAT!!!
^ Oh, I did see all your other stats @beyonder12; among other things, that’s how I knew you played Bass Clarinet, were double (maybe triple) “connected” (brother, cousin and dad) at Deerfield, and that you were half-Jamaican. You seem like a good candidate, overall.
I would follow your dad’s lead here. If he thinks you need 80%, just do your best on the January test, hope for the best from the December one, and then make a final decision whether to apply. You didn’t mention whether you would need any financial aid - that could possibly be an issue. All I am saying is that a 75% will not knock you out at all. In fact, based on what I have seen regarding legacies in my own experience and research, I don’t think in your particular case, getting an 85% or above will make a big difference. They’ll either let you in or not based on other factors.
“OP” just means “original poster” - you!
Last, people are going to tell you that there is only a “slight” difference in admissions criteria for legacies and URM. That is bunk, based on what I have seen. They will make large exceptions. You might ask your dad to ask what percent of Deerfield student body is legacy or otherwise connected (sibling, “friend” of the school). I bet it’s at least 40-50%.
Again, I am absolutely not saying that you are going to get in, and @PhotographerMom is wise in encouraging you to apply broadly; all I am saying is that a 75% SSAT for you is not going to make much of a difference in my opinion. Best of luck, don’t stress and just do the best you can in January! 75% in itself won’t keep you out, but higher can’t hurt, right?
