I think there was a policy change a few years ago. In the past the talent search programs encouraged students to enroll in the talent search program that served that state. It now appears that several of these programs welcome students without regard to location.

It is hard to project forward from SSAT to SAT when taken in the same year. Also, SATs cover math your child may or may not have covered already. I would say that you should look at the openings now for CTY so that if your son does qualify, you can act very quickly. There are two levels for the summer - CAA which is easier and CTY which is harder. Scores are done by grade within these two groups.
CAA is here [Summer Programs](http://www.cty.jhu.edu/summer/caaelig.html)
CTY is here: [Summer Programs](http://www.cty.jhu.edu/summer/oselig.html)

UGH I am so annoyed with college board today. They screwed up on the registration date transfer and now have no record of S taking the test on 6/6/09 and no scores available. Looks like we are not going to make the CTY cutoff date of 6/30! I called and they said we’ll have to send this to another department to look for it and they will get back to you in a week!

This does not inspire confidence in this organization.

Just received son’s sat scores- they were delayed in being reported.

The good news: he made the cut off for CTY math and humanities courses and also made the award ceremony cutoff. :)

The bad news: there are no open summer courses anymore :(

What is considered a “good” sat score for an 8th grader?

I don’t think you can say what is considered good. My 8th grade brother took it and got a 1640 if you want to compare it to anyone. (Sorry I’m not a parents :P)

The awards ceremony cutoff is very good.
If your son has his heart set on an academic summer program, you can use those SAT scores to get him into the other GT summer programs. Duke has a program (TIP?). Northwestern has a program (I forgot the name – maybe CTD?). I think there are others.

TIP is going on right now. I’m on the campus visiting my brother and cousin. They may have another session though idk.

Thanks mpicz and burb parent- I am looking at the CTY online computer programming courses since he is all about computer programming right now!

I wish I had done this last year (summer before 8th grade) so he could have “tried out” boarding before attending bs this fall. Oh well, better late than never!

Thanks again everyone!

My son will be at CTY Session 2 at the JHU Baltimore campus, which begins 7/19. I’m wondering if they might have last minute openings for your son. I say this because we were sent a document telling us that if a kid appears to be have any questionable symptoms they do not want them to attend. If I remember correctly, a fever within 7 days of attending is considered suspect. I guess this is in response to H1N1. In any case, I wonder if it might be worth checking with them about waitlisting.

Duke’s TIP program publishes a score comparison. It is for 7th graders but still provides a sense of what to expect from the 8th grade ranges: http://www.tip.duke.edu/talent_searches/grade_7/7TSResultsSummary.pdf

My memory is that CTY mails a score comparison but I have not seen it on the web.

Wow- thanks BostonDad2. I know that is for 7th graders but comparing son’s scores to that made me realize how amazing he did perform for his age!
