SSAT - superscoring

I don’t suppose independent schools superscore the SSAT, like many colleges do? Our 8th grader has taken it twice; once bombing the verbal section, once bombing math (bombed reading both times, which is not unexpected, as she’s dyslexic.). Taken together, the two high scores aren’t so bad. But separately…eh. Only the first test was sent to the school. We just got results for test #2 back yesterday and are weighing whether it will help or hurt to send them to the school.

I don’t know of any BS that doesn’t superscore. All the ones our kid looked at did. Perhaps folks can chime in with any schools that don’t superscore.

Which school are you concerned about? You can always ask them, you know.

I think most do but the bigger question or concern is that they can’t unsee the other subscores. Who enters this information into their system and does the Admissions committee see all scores regardless? A question that likely none of us can answer.

I have heard interesting commentary re multiple test attempts (both SSAT and SAT/ACT). There is certainly a school of thought that seeing 3,4 and more test attempts can actually send a bad message for many reasons. Obsession with test scores performance; a super score derived from multiple test attempts is not ideal

I can only speak to what I was told about Andover and Exeter. At Andover I was told that they have a data entry person who just plugs in the best scores. At exeter however they consider all scores. It truly depends on the school and the only person who can answer that is your admissions officer.

While true, one just needs to file it under “it is what it is.” If one thinks this is a concern for boarding school, wait until the college admissions process. You would not believe the number of posts we get about score choice/superscoring/hiding scores.

If a college or HS says they consider the best score, then take them at their word. There are few other ethical options other than only taking the test once.

Personally, I don’t think 3 is an issue with any college. 5 probably gets into the realm of overtesting.

Tabor just informed me they “superscore” SSAT. Never thought to ask at other schools but now I will.

Interesting - thanks. It hadn’t occurred to me that a HS would superscore. She’s only taken it 2x, and now she’s done, except for the waiting…

It seems it is to the school’s advantage to at least say they superscore so they can publish better average scores. As was said, it is what it is.

A followup… I was at an admissions event last night and asked, per your recommendation. And they do superscore. Who knew. Colleges tout this, but I had never seen our BS talk about it and this is not my 1st kid going thru the process. So, thanks all.
