SSAT - Your opinion please

Is an overall 91%, excellent, very strong, good, okay?

Grades: all A's and 1 B+ in english
EC: good
Personality: nice, kind, thoughtful, quiet

Applying to West Coast (California) independent high schools.

It’s a good score. I remember when I got my score in the mail (I got a 92) I was disappointed at first, then I realized this meant I did better than 92 percent of all the people who have taken it the last 3 years. So I was a bit happier after that. Also your score is above most schools average SSAT, so that’s good. Congratulations.

Thanks. The schools don’t give an average SSAT required but what I am hearing is that most of them have an average of 82%. So, hoping 91% is considered strong since I’m not applying to top boarding schools.

Anyone else have thoughts on this.

91% is great! what about your individual scores?

Individual scores are:

Verbal: 746 (91%)
Math: 758 (84%)
Reading: 709 (87%)
Total: 2214 (91%)

Appreciate thoughts!

Do you know the average SSAT scores of the student body at the schools you are applying to?

No, none of the schools post information about average SSAT’s so I’m going off of what I hear. Most say that the averages are 82% which, if true, makes me think 91% is great. Even though I’m not applying to a top boarding school, would my scores put me in the running at all (realize there are many other factors to consider).

Definitely, most of the top school’s cut offs are 80% (some have said that 80 is like rock bottom, the lowest they’d consider) so you’re above the cut off.

Katester- You’re completely wrong about your statement that the top schools have cut offs for SSAT scores. I just wanted to tell you that someone on this forum got into Exeter with a 71% SSAT last year and I know someone who got into SPS last year with a 58% SSAT. Top Schools do not have cut offs and if they do, I highly doubt that they would make this information publicly available.

Swissbrit, I think that there very well may be exceptions where kids get in with lower than typical scores, but please realize that they are exceptions and I would have to think that there was something remarkable in the rest of their app to have admissions overlook the score.

To the OP - a 91 is a great score. Don’t think anymore about it.

Neato- Yes, obviously, there are and will always be exceptions but I don’t think that there are any firm cut offs.

This is the truth: my D is freshman at a HADES school now. Not going to say which one, but she had only a 68% SSAT average. Just not a good standardized test taker. Good athlete, great interviewer, great recommendations, and now an honor roll student taking normal freshman schedule.

These schools want exceptional kids, with “exceptional” being a function of many things. I’m not saying I’d suggest scoring this low on the test as a strategy, but if you have something unique to offer you’ve got a shot.

FYI, we did NOT apply for financial aid. I’m sure that helped too.

Swissbrit - Sorry! what I meant by that is that you really need something special about yourself if you’re going to get in with that score. I don’t think that the average candidate would be accepted with that. I’m sure there are kids out there who have gotten in with lower scores, sorry I have to be more clear with my answers.

91% overall is pretty strong for So Cal schools. Are you in NorCal or SoCal? I think it may be more competitive up north.

I really appreciate all the feedback. FYI, we are in Northern California.
