Received my ssat scores today too. Got a 90 % percentile in verbal, 95% percentile in reading, and 39% in math. Wonder if anyone with such lopsided scores would get into Exeter, Andover, Milton, or Concord.
Any thoughts

To be honest I would seriously consider taking the test again. Your scores in reading and verbal are great but as I'm sure you know your math needs to improve. Try getting a tutor or buying some study guides. But don't get your hopes down I'm sure you can still make it work

So, what's going on with you in math? Talk to us about math, how much you like it or dislike it. Have you had math successes or has it always been a challenge for you? Is this score (and take a loot at the National Percentile Estimate before you feel ashamed of it) representative of where you think you stand as a math student?

What did the SSAT report indicate in terms of answered/missed/blank? What math course(s) are you taking? What do you think your math teacher will say in your recommendation? These things will become extremely important because schools will need to look more critically at your math credentials with a score like that. And you need to decide whether to retake the test or whether this score is just about right, given your aptitude for math.

take the test again hun, i just don't think schools like exeter are going to appreciate the math score! your other scores are amazing tho, congratulations on them!

My scores aren't at lopsided, but a little bit. I'm thinking of applying to Choate, Exeter, Hotchkiss, The Hill, Lawrenceville, and Taft. Almost all 'tier one' school, but I have options outside of prep school so...

I'm usually a strong reader, so I'm not too sure what happened during the exam. I should get a good rec from my teacher-- will that make up for it? Verbal...I don't have to best vocabulary, but again, I should get a good rec from my language arts teacher. Math...it reflects my math pretty accurately, although I thought I could've done much better. Overall, I think I could've done much better and am seriously considering re-taking.

What do you think of my scores right now?

boo x, they are good scores but the schools you have applied for are very selective, still go for it but if you don't have any other hooks then maybe, maybe you should retry. hmmm that sounded really negative, i dont mean it like that.. they ARE good scores its just that they could be a little higher.

Oh, don't worry. No offense taken at all, because I was thinking the same thing. I don't think they're high scores, really, and I'm pretty sure if I practiced and studied more I could get in to the 90th %ile, or at least the high 80s. I have a few sports--no awards for them-- and quite a few community service ECs. I'm white and asian, but not exactly a URM. The only legacy I have is a cousin at Lawrenceville, so that's not exactly a legacy. So, no I don't have any strong hook. Wow, that took me awhile to figure out haha :).

My son got his SSAT score for Nov. 10, not very good since we decided to take that only one week before the test and really has no time to prep it. Verbal 713 79%, math 761 87% and Reading 701 84% overall 2175, 87%. He is thinking about apply for the pingry school in NJ and Peddie School. He is a good swimmer in the state and has good GPA in his school. Anybody knows if he should take the test again?

tqli7981 - 87% is a great score. I don't think he needs to take it again. Most of our school administrators/teachers don't recommend heavy prepreation anyway.

ellis- I would really consider retaking the test. Unless you have a really hard time with math, those scores suggest that you may have made a clerical error when recording your answers.
ALWAYS remember to check your answer sheet with your question booklet after every set of 10 questions to make sure that you are on the same number in the booklet and the answer sheet, it is a small thing that takes just seconds to do, but if you catch an error it can prevent a major problem.
Good luck if you decide to retake the test.

My son received the SSAT scores listed below, but was not satisified with his math results. His goal is to gain acceptance at Saint Albans, Georgetown Prep, Saint Anselms Abbey and Gonzaga, which are located in Washington, DC. Would, you recommend him retaking the exam. Regarding math couses, he is presently taking Algebra II.

SSAT - Verbal 800 99
SSAT - Math 743 79
SSAT - Reading 728 95
SSAT - Total 2271 97

Those are excellent scores. I do not think he should take the test again.

hey! i'm an 8th grade girl. on the parctice ssat i got 731 for math, 779 for vocab and 748 for reading. do you know what my percentiles wold be? Thanks.

Are these the percintiles relative to scores for an eight grader? I'm taking the test 1/8/08....Thanks.

My question was directed to BooX.

Thanks

BooX, your scores are fine for those schools...they meet the standard.
many think that these schools won't let people in if they don't get scores in the 90s, which is untrue. of coarse the person has to meet some standard, and your scores are pretty good, i wouldn't worry... i know some people who have been accepted to all the schools you are speaking of with lower scores.

Yeah, sorry about this, I am really anxious about not getting accepted.
Here it is:
I am a US Citizen in the 8th grade in Seoul Korea (international school)
I get mostly A's with occasional B's (our school has a rigorous system, and the grading system is 94-100--> A)
SSAT- 91
I am in the high school cross country team, high school varsity swim team, and JV Basketball team.
I'm part of a team of 40-50 students who goes to Indonesia during Spring Break for voluntary community service.
I am pretty much doing reach schools.
For my interviews, some I did with the admissions dean when they came to korea, and some with regional reps, and 2 on the phone

Any chance at all?

In response to the original question, Andover reports an average (combined) SSAT of 93rd percentile on its web site. Figure that they're willing to bend more for URMs, legacies and athletes in certain sports, but this says if you're none of these, you need to be well above the 93rd percentile. My son was 99th percentile SSAT with straight A's but none of the above hooks, and was rejected by both Andover and Exeter when he applied in 2002. He did fine at another prep school.

my scores are a little lopsided also.

i got a 98% in reading, 96% in verbal, but a 74% in math. My score was in the 97th percentile overall, but my math score is really bugging me. I am in Algebra 2/trig honors and I have an A in it. I thought that math was one of my strong suits. It is really weird. What do you guys think?

If math is one of your strong suits, your recommendations, grades, course selection and other standardized test scores from your school will bear that out. Maybe even some ECs. You might even mention that it's a strength elsewhere in your application.
