Ssp

one of my students went last summer and had a great experience. I think she got a letter based on having taken the AMC exam. People who do not receive letters should certainly apply anyway if they are interested.

Well, I can't necessarily be a stats advisor since I'm not really familiar with the admissions system - which seems to be rather unique.

My stats now:

Chinese male sophomore from Redmond, WA.
3.97 GPA UW.
A in IB Calculus and Pre-IB Chemistry.
1330 SAT I in 9th grad (690 Verbal, 640 Math)e
213 PSAT in 10th: (76 Math, 67 Verbal, 70 Writing)
800 SAT II Math IIC
690 SAT II Writing
SAT II Chemistry: will receive next week, expect range of 760-800.

WIll take AP Calc BC, AP CHem, and AP Euro. Partially self-study.

Past two summers taking math courses at the local UW.

Also, is Mr. Bowdon only giving one-word answers to your e-mails? (he used to give me full sentence responses, but now only one word responses). It's getting me rather...concerned.

Well, now that we've all finished our NASA SHARP apps, we're now on work on our SSP apps. Can somoene please give me input on which is more creative/unusual?

When I was playing a music file in the computer, I wanted it to loop. Since I’m a newbie to music programs, I decided to create a blank webpage and wrote the HTML instructions (I actually simply stole the code from another website that used music looping) necessary to run the music. <bgsound loop="-1" src="3ktheme.mid">

Discovering new mathematical properties on my own, or proving something on my own. But they're pretty mundane...

Or... Getting my school to register for AMC-12B for the second date, paying partially some of the fee.

i wrote him a two paragraph e-mail asking tons of questions, and he responded with about a paragraph's worth of info

as for ur question on what is most interesting.....if it were me I would go with the computer one, but even that doesn't sound "exotic" enough. Maybe find a situation that involved other people as well, and not just yourself and the computer. I don't know, that's just how I feel.

Good luck to all who are applying (forget NASA Sharp, SSP is where it's at!)

Thanks for the input Unnfortunately, I can't think of anything particularly creative that stands out. Can anyone else share examples of what they put under the most creative category?

Simfish, I seems I've been reading your stats in a lot of posts. Did you post them a lot, or is it just my illusion from the NASA SHARP thread? =P

I'm also applying for SSP now that NASA SHARP is out of the way. I just need to come up with a good approach to the SSP essay and answer the questions on the app. I think my stats are okay, so that shouldn't be a major problem I guess.

(By the way, does being in the top 3% of both AMC 10 and 12 (freshman+sophomore) help?)

Well, SSP doesn't include any place to mention awards - so unless you find a place to mention them (it could replace some more useful info as well), I doubt it'll help.

Well, as for the NASA SHARP, I think I posted my stats three times. I was initially really worried if I was applying just to get a rejection and then posted more of them as they finalized. And yeah, I do post them a lot. Here's them again: :P And are they exceptional enough to overcome one fallibility I have? That is - Asperger's SYndrome and temper tantrums? My science teacher will mention temper tantrums and a lack of self-control and negative reaction to setbacks (what he calls as anti-social behavior) in the application although he still says that he'll highly recommend me. Still, if I might be perceived as a threat...

Won team award for 4th place team in state mathematics competition in 10th grade: 9th/10th grade competition. I barely missed top 10 individual due to stupid mistakes bah.
25 USAMTS first round.
AMC 12A. I believe 104.5, but unfortunately, because I no longer have my test booklet, I cannot mention it.

what did all of you put for your most creative/unusual thing that you have ever done in the ssp app.?
and when are we supposed to know if we get accepted?

woah slow down there buddy...don't be all certain about "accepted" now.

As for creative - I said, wanted to loop music even though I didn't know how to use mp3 player so I just looped it with HTML.

Well, even if it isn't that selective, SSP still does a damn good job of selecting who comes: (almost everyone goes to prestigious)

<a href="http://www.summerscience.org/includes/UT2004.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.summerscience.org/includes/UT2004.pdf</a></p>

jthecanadian, i didnt mean that i thought i was going to be accepted. in fact, i have no idea if i'll get in or not. i was just wondering how long it took the ssp people to select their applicants.
what was your most creative/unusual thing? im just curious what everyone put.
