Plus I had 213 PSAT (76 math, 67 verbal, 70 writing) and did do the optional application supplement.

Hi,

*

[You will receive the following soon by postal mail, but I wanted to let you know as soon as possible by email.]

We regret to inform you that the Admissions Committee is not able to offer you a place in the 2005 Summer Science Program. Because we had a record number of very competitive group of applicants from around the world, and enrollment was strictly limited, we found it necessary to deny admission to quite a few promising young scientists, such as yourself.

Should you wish to apply to another summer program this year, I can suggest some good online lists of summer programs:

We thank you for your interest in the Summer Science Program and we appreciate that the time required to prepare your application was a significant investment. Although this outcome may be disappointing for you, we strongly encourage you to continue your scientific studies.

Well life is hell. It sucks. Life is nasty, unfair, brutish, and short.

I feel for you man. And it looked like you were the most passionate SSPer on this board as well. This makes me doubt my own chances...

We'll talk on AIM.

Reformatted for easier reading.Out of the 8 summer programs I'm applying to, I may only have a chance to 1. It doesn't look optimistic. I thought I had the best chance for SSP.

Decision: Rejected.

Sophomore
3.98 GPA
SAT I: 1330
PSAT: 213
ACT: 31
SAT IIs: Math IIC: 800, Chemistry: 790, Writng 690
AIME Qualifier
IB Calculus and pre-IB Chemistry, both A's
Advantages: Academically qualified, *ing motivated, *ing passionate
Disadvantages: had to disclose Asperger's because emotional immaturity was mentioned in another rec, Chinese male with no life.
Remarks: Eh, life is hell. If science doesn't want autistic Chinese people with no life, i'll live out my life programming. Unremarkable but like I said, life is nasty, brutish, and short.

jthecanadian, thanks, but I'm uninstalling AIM tonight.

Getting back to life? Yeah man, I know how you feel. I wish you the very best; and I mean that man. Go prove them wrong for next year.

yeah, thanks. to add insult to injury, one of my parents will be very pleased.

dont worry simfish, its gonna be alright man.
o man i didnt even get any notice yet, but i guess its just a matter of time before an inevitable rejection......
simfish, just out of curiosity, when did u turn in ur stuff? I turned mine in a day or two before the deadline

I turned it in 5 minutes before the deadline. I'm a very bad procrastinator. :(

dont worry simfish, u got a whole 'nother year ahead of u for ssp, and this summer u still got chances at other great programs
keep ur head up son!

i think i got accepted...but im not sure.
i wasn't home when they called and my mom answered the phone. when i got home she said that a summer science program called me informing me that i was accepted. perhaps it was THE Summer Science Program. omg, i hope so! i didn't apply to anything else exept for one i already got accepted to and one that doesn't notify applicants until late april or so.
did anyone else get called, or emailed, or written a letter???

~rahrah~

also...how easily do they give financial aid??? there is no way that i can afford it unless they pay for ALL of it. does anyone know??

rahrah, stats please.

Also, why would they call if they could simply give an e-mail? But I guess it just happens.

::sigh:: I'm hopelessly addicted to this thread now

i have pretty good stats. im not going to list them all but...
34 ACT, and uh...drat! i forgot my psat. oh well...
im going to ISEF for the second time this year as a sophmore. last year i won a whole lot of junk (and money. ;-) oh, and we got to present at the 205th AAS meeting). last year we (it was a team project) did a really, really good project about astronomical spectroscopy and built our own instruments, got our own data, and analyzed it. this year we got to use a small observatory and use their instruments to get data.
ive won a couple of state-wide mathcontests, etc. (but im from kind of a stupid state, so that's not saying much.) im in calc AB but im learning BC on my own. and im also taking ap statistics too. i have something like a 4.6 weighted, 4.0 unw gpa. i go to an IB school and take all those stupid courses that the stupid counselers make me take, etc. what else? oh! extracurriculars...uh...im not gonna list those.

i can send you my application with my essays and stuff if you want. im not posting them though.

Oh that would be great simfish@gmail.com thx

-------------excerpt from admission letter to my friend--------
Hi Sidney,

The SSP Admissions Committee has accepted your application to the 47th
annual Summer Science Program in Ojai, California. Congratulations!

We received applications from qualified students around the world,
allowing us to select only the most outstanding. You will find that
the opportunity to do an astronomical research project, in the company
of 35 other bright, interesting young scientists, will make SSP an

unforgettable and exhilarating experience.

damn..simfish, i think the only reason why you were rejected was cuz of the no. of applicants..and word has it that SSP actually favors juniors...and since ure sophomore..your stats cant really match up to a junior..for instance...i have a close friend who got in this yr....and his stats..very good..heh....
222 psat...1480 SATI...800 Physics...760 Chemistry...nearly 4.0 gpa..his essays were exceptional... did not apply for financial aid..and im very sure he got good recs...
and the reason why i know its cuz of the no. of applicants is becuz i got in last yr (well, deferred to this yr) w/ seriously crappy stats..like ive mentioned before...
ill go w/ my friend this yr..heh..if i get rejected to rsi and mites..
just apply nex yr..im sure you'll get in...
i mean..u DO know it is much harder for sophomores right?...

waaaaaah simfish....i thought you had a decent shot!! Oh wow now I'm freaked out...cuz i'm a soph too and my PSAT was 7 points lower than yours and I didn't even have any SAT II's!!

Yeah, they do favor juniors...hahaha oh well, guess I'm not going anywhere this summer!! Haven't got any word yet from SSP, but I'm praying it isn't a negative answer.

doesn't adcom compare sophomores and juniors separately with some kind of quotas or something similar??

maybe adcom just had a really competitive sophomore applicant pool..

drat! some summer science program called and said i got it, but I don't know which one!!!!
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
and i can't just email the guy at ssp, "hey, a summer program called me, and i...uh...thought it might be the ssp. did you accept me?"

what should i do??

i think you should just wait because they are going to send you some packages anyway..

and personally, i wouldn't mind sending them an e-mail like that, but if you prefer, you could just wait..

how long were ur responses to the questionnaire? rahrah just sent her e-mail to me - and they were many sentences long. Mine were only 5-6 sentences.

i actually don't remember..-_-;; i submitted a little before the feb 25 deadline and don't remember what exactly i wrote.. i just hope i get some sort of e-mail decision soon..
