SSTP Iowa 2016

Greetings!
I’m here for any questions regarding the SSTP program at U of Iowa. I was in it 2 years ago, and some of my best memories are from it, and it’s also opened many, many doors for me.
What type of research do you do? You will be assigned a lab based on your application essay and interests. They range from engineering and physics to medicine and chem/bio/neuro research.
What do you do outside of the 8hr lab day? Explore Iowa City, hang out with the other interns, do whatever crazy fun things
Where are the SSTP-Iowa alumni now? Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, Columbia, Duke, UChic, UPenn, Northwestern, Brown, Cal, 7-year MD programs, etc.
Is there anything in Iowa? There was not a single moment during the program I felt bored. We were either having a good time in the lab, or having a good time with the other interns.

were u able to get out off campus? ( by yourself)

How possible is it for an alternate to be actually admitted to the program? I just got an email saying that I’m deferred. :frowning:

@BHan98 Yeah i am also an alternate…this is weird though and it makes me think that all programs select students differently or using a different method because I got into RSI at MIT for this year! But got rejected from Garcia and waitlisted here, so I’m not sure how that works…

General/vague stats: I’m an Asian male from America with 2300+ SAT, 3.9+ UW GPA, plenty of research experience, AIME qualifier, etc.

But yeah I’m not sure how the alternate process works.

Has anyone else not been notified?

Does anyone know how selective this program is? I was just wondering about it .
Is it like… the more selective, the higher quality a summer program is of?

@performante wow congrats! Anyway I didn’t apply to RSi b/c of its competitiveness. I applied to Garcia and got rejected, and got deferred by SSTP. I feel horrible about myself rn. :frowning:

finally found this official thread? Anyone going this summer? I just got notified this afternoon

S got accepted. He is still waiting for MSU HSHSP which would not come out till end of April. However Iowa ask for commit on 4/11. Does anyone know how to do this?

haha, just got rejected

hoping that I will get in to BU RISE

I got accepted and I will be going. What lab group did you get ArtistNatureLove?

I also got accepted. I was wondering if we are going to have free time or if there are going to be lots of supervised events for us to attend?

On the Belin-Blank Center website they have a typical schedule for each day (only Monday to Thursday). Monday to Thursday seems pretty busy, with only 1.5 hrs of free time. However, I think that we will have more free time on the weekends.

I got in as well. @123NewYorker @ArtistNatureLove what lab groups are y’all in? Are y’all sophomores or juniors? I’ll be working in a biology-oriented group and I’m a sophomore.

Hi! I’m a sophomore and I am in a chemistry (material science) lab group.

Hey Guys! I was an alumni for SSTP a couple years ago in the Engineering lab at Uiowa, so feel free to ask me any questions if you want. I also posted some more info about the research program in the threads from previous years, so you can check those out too.

I am interested to know what everyone thinks as well

I was accepted. I am a high school junior.

Some stats about me:
PSAT= 1370
UWGPA= 4.0
ACT= 34

EC’s include class president for 3 years, boy scouts (eagle), and varsity badminton team captain.

hello, it is bio-related, something about genetics and dental health. they did not tell me what kind of research I would be doing. What lab are you in? Let’s make a SSTP group on Facebook @123NewYorker

same, i’ll be in bio too. i’m a sophomore. @meteormelon
