St. Andrews's UG Reputation in the US

Hi all, I’ve been accepted to and likely going to attend St Andrews focusing on Physics and Astronomy and possibly also taking Philosophy. I’m wondering what the reputation the institution has in those fields in the US, as I’d like to go back to the states for an MA/likely PhD hoping to attend an elite school.

I think I may have posted something similar to this previously, but I realize my question was not very concise.

Thanks!

@sangstar - Congratualtions! All your hard work paid off. I hope you feel proud!

Thanks so much!

The reputation won’t be a problem. The undergraduate physics major in the US is pretty standardized, and you will almost certainly be covering the same material at StA’s (I haven’t checked it, but I have for several other UK unis). Be aware that grad schools will be looking for research experience, and that most (though not all) will want you to take both the Physics GRE and the general GRE. Also, in the US it is more usual to go straight into a combined Masters/PhD program whereas in the UK it is more usual to do a Masters and then a PhD- but the total time is generally similar.

St Andrews weirdly enough has a better reputation in the US than even in the UK - its one of those unis that inextricably became very popular abroad (well, I think the royal offspring studying there had a lot to do with it). So I think you will be fine. I should point out though, and you are probably well aware of this, that St Andrews is a very small place and extremely expensive. My friends sister studied there so I had many chances to visit. Its just something to know about before moving, but its beautiful
