St. George's School, Newport RI

Hi guys,

I will be going to SG for 10th grade with my twin sister, and I have many questions. I know the answers to these questions might be on the Handbook, but I haven’t received them yet and I can’t find them on the website. Anyone who has a child/children who goes or went to SG, or anyone who goes to SG?

  1. What is the dress code at SG?
  2. How does laundry work?
  3. Weekend activities at SG?
  4. How are the bathrooms?
  5. Are the dorms considered big or small?

Some comments on life at SG or academically are appreciated as well! Anything about SG is appreciated.

That’s all for now.

Thank you guys

I am not a student at St. Georges but I did apply and went back for a revisit day. I will try to answer what I remember. The freshman dorms are pretty new and the rooms are very spacious. I believe that sophomores (or 4th formers) are spread out around the campus. I guess the bathrooms will depend on what dorm you are in. There appeared to be a bunch of weekend activities. Saturday half day classes, sports games, there is a van called the dragon wagon that takes kids into Newport. Compared to most BS towns Newport is a city! (not really) but there are lots of shops and restaurants. There is also the beach in the warmer months. At night the school usually has something for the kids to do, a movie, dance or play. The faculty and the kids seem very close. My student that I went to class with said that the school nick name is St. Gorgeous. I must say most of the students were very good looking. The school appears to have lots of great travel opportunities. Take advantage of those.

@iamlucky Thank you very much! This helped me A LOT. Appreciate it!

@iamlucky also, for the dress code, did you notice anyone wearing jeans and a tshirt? I heard they have a formal dress code but that is normally what I wear to school…

I am pretty sure that jeans and t-shirts are not allowed during the academic day. Most girls were wearing leggings with high boots and a nice top or sweater. I wore a pair of patterned cords and a nice sweater. I think the boys had on coat and tie.

Jeans are not ok (dress code) at most “formal dress” boarding schools. If you are that worried about all of this, call Admissions and ask for the school handbook. They are usually online, but may be in a password protected area. I am sure your admissions contact can point you in the right direction. Or, you can wait a bit until they do the summer mailing in which will, no doubt, be all your answers. As to laundry, I assume that you will have a choice between signing up for a weekly, paid service or doing your own in common facilities on campus.

BTW, these would have been good questions to ask when you were conducting your search – what if you really didn’t want a formal dress code? If you prefer jeans and a t-shirt, this will be a big change for you (but not a bad one! formal dress codes are a truly prep school rite of passage).

Not for everybody. I’ve been quite happy spending 4 years in sweats/khakis/jeans/tees. :slight_smile:

@skieurope I know it’s not for everyone. I guess my (clumsy?) point was… If a person is a t-shirt and jeans kinda person, I would have thought the dress code question would have already come up (and been answered and evaluated) prior to enrolling.

@london203 Agreed.

@iamlucky: Thank you again!

@london203: well, the dress code is not something that will bother my decision of enrolling into a school. I was just curious about the dress code, and to start planning what clothes I would like to bring to SG. Thank you for your help and comments regarding the dress code and student handbook though. I have reached out to the admission team asking where I could get a copy of this handbook. Thank you!

I feel sure they will help you out! They have to know that it takes time to get everything ready for September… I am surprised they make it so hard to find out – but good luck to you! Exciting times.
