They look pretty good to me. I wonder if a school like St. John's for 60 year olds would fly?

I know a 16 year-old that is interested in St. John's. Likes the Great Books concept and studying for education, not grades.

I live in Maryland and am somewhat familiar with St. John's there and the students who are known as Johnnies.

For a kid that loves to learn, St. John's provides an great liveral arts education. In fact, it could be argued that it's education may be better than that found a many top schools. There are lots of discussion, peer interaction, small classes and knowledgable professors. You won't get either a teaching assistant in class nor someone who has a problem with the English language.

It focuses on critial thinking and reading. Although, I do think that they go a bit far teaching Greek and Latin in order to read the ancient works in their original language, it is interesting in the way that they do it.

Many of their graduates have gone on to great success in graduate schools, professional schools such as medical and law, and are CEOs in major corporations.

Be advised that it is a small school. You won't get the normal college feel of large sports' programs for example.

Bottom Line:for a kid that is looking for a well-balanced education, loves to learn for learning sake, and is a very strong reader and writer, St. John's is a terrific place to be.

I agree about St. John's being terrific for a certain set of kids.

I believe that they not longer require Latin. As I understand it, they still teach Classical Greek (for two years) and then teach French. All students are required to learn both languages.

Son's GC had recommended St. John's in New Mexico for my son's list this year. It appealed to him and her for all the reasons cited above. His sis is already in NM at another school so he was leary for that reason and as a 3-season athlete the lack of big-time sports was also a no-go.

Kat

PS DD loves New Mexico!! She is having a great time, and has decided to stay there for spring break and travel with her friends. I did not think she would have so much fun and still make dean's list!

Actually, St. John's College does have some interesting initiatives in place for people who are out of college. Check out "Educational Outreach"

and the Graduate Institute:

dstark, I posted about St. John's in the St. John's section of Colleges on this site. My brother is a 'Johnnie' and loved it.

Thanks everybody for the posts.

Adad, thanks for the links. The educational outreach programs look great.
