St.Johns University Queens NY

Ok, so here's the deal . I would like as much help/feedback as possible .
Thanks !

So , I should mention this from the start . I'm from L.A ,California . I've been here all my life and I love NY and I would like to attend college out there . I might possibly live there after school . I believe that it would be good for me to start my new chapter in life .. but anyway ; let me get to the point .. I've been doing my search for colleges all summer . And I plan on continuing . I start my j.r year in september so I feel that its good that I'm getting a headstart on my college planning/search...

Colleges that I plan on applying have changed many times.. but I won't go into that . I have a a new list now and I'm sure it will change again . ( please bare with me & my long post )

Ok - I plan on being an OB/GYN in the future and I have to do 4 years of undergrad . Would st.johns be a good bet for me ? ( yes I have other schools , I'm focusing on st.johns right now ) I mean as in their biology and pre-med ( I think they do have this ) . I've done my research on this school but id like to know a bit more about it from other people . St.johns seems like a place I will enjoy . I just want to hear other opinions. I've read many online reviews and so much more , but you can't always go by their judgement . I hear st.johns IS noticed . Also a great school .

Just let me know everything YOU know about this school . I mean EVERYTHINg/
From biology , to dorms , to parties , to food etc. Although I've read abit about it , just let me know please . It would be VERY helpful for me .. thanks a lot !

What about the school attracts you? It certainly isn’t your typical residential, party life college many would come from CA for. Most students there are commuters from the area.

I would definitely not want to come all the way to california for st. johns ( i live very close to the campus/ my mom went there for undergrad/grad). Its a fine commuter school and has a good pharmacy program… but it doesn’t justify the plane tickets (and conversely im going to cali for college haha).

In addition, I don’t know where you think it is, but it’s not smack dab in the middle of manhattan. So if you were looking for a very urban school, St. John’s isn’t your choice (look for Pace, NYU, Columbia). It’s in Queens, not very near a subway (15 min ride to a subway, and then around another 15 minutes to get to the city).

The school sucks. Point blank.

It isn’t UCLA- not at all. It can give you a great education in a lot of ways, and as far as aid will go, if you’re a competitive applicant, they will likely give you a lot of aid.

As far as all those social things go, I don’t really know about it. Try *****, Youniversity, TheU, and other college websites. Watch their videos and read reviews. People will be honest on them. The few things I know is that it is by far a commuter school, it is very diverse in its student body, and it has a very good Pharmacy program (extremely difficult to get in to).

college click tv is the best.

House of London, lol yeah, i live about 20 min away, its a joke

Why is http://www..com/ censored?

Check out Fordham U. Not in Manhattan but closer.

It wouldn’t make sense for you to come to the opposite side of the country for STJ. There are way better schools in NYC my friend.

Columbia, Cornell, Fordham Uni, etc

I know where it is , but my point of this post was to get info on the bio/pre med program .
Thanks though .

My question realy isn’t gtetting answered . Yeah I know where st.johns is . Yes I know its not in manhattan , I think I’ve mentioned before that I have a list of schools , pace , and fordham being two. I made this post because I wanted to know about their biology program but I’m getting other stuff instead . I’ve read reviews , been on as many websites as you can imagine . But I just wanted to know about their bio/pre-med mainly …

But , thanks I guess -_-

Ok , yeah I’m pretty aware of the commuter part , also the parties . But like they say college is what you make it . But would you happen to know anything about the biology or pre med program , because that’s mainly what my post was made for .

I’m sorry, but St. John’s University truly has become a terrible school of last resort.

I’m sure you could get a satisfying pre-medical education at Fordham, an excellent school a subway ride away from Manhattan.

Kwu - thank you . I am considering Fordham . Do you know anything about st.johns biology though ? Maybe I should have mentioned this before but st.johns isn’t one of my top school , but it is def. One I am considering as maybe a saftey school . But you have to be happy with your safter school also you know .
Thanks again !

glamour_trash: It would be helpful if you consolidated all your replies into one post. The St. John’s biology program isn’t well known but they have a few good professors (have you tried rate my professor?), nobody well-known really. SJU is a school where the intelligent, high-scoring kids go only if they haven’t received admission to top schools or they didn’t get enough aid. If you want a Jesuit U in NYC, definitely pick Fordham. I don’t want to be repetitive, but if you are a competitive admit, then the 40% admissions rate at Fordham will likely make it a safety for you.

Alexandrafitxmor - thanks a lot . I’ve been on the site but I’ve never really " checked into it " my internet is off right now so I am using my G1 cell phone . But when I do get a chance I WILL check it out . Thanks again . Biology is what I want to major in so it is important for me to know about the teachers . I currently go to catholic schoola and I really didn’t want to go down that route for college but st.johs and fordham are acceptions . I use to want to go to NYU , but I was a bit discouraged when I did some research on them . I don’t have the best grades , but I still have jr. & sr. Year left of h.s and I’m willing to bring them up . I plan on doing lots of extracurricular activities this year and continuing my voulenteering . I’ve only voulenteered about 40hrs at Cedars Sinai and 70 is required for my school , I plan to do more though . I had a 3.0 and finals came and I ended up with the final grade of 2.87 for soph. Year. So as you can see I’m not ivy league material grade wise lol . Sorry about my rambeling , but I am also considering hofstra and pace . If anyone knows about them please let me know . Thanks again

Well, at the moment you don’t have the grades, but I think it is possible for you to get into such schools as SJU and Fordham. Your issue is really going to be in proving that you can handle the course work. GPA’s and SAT scores aside, lets focus on the school search. There are many Jesuit universities, and they often have a background of Catholicism, but not much activity, with a diverse student body. Notre Dame, Georgetown, and Fordham are like that. On the other side, St. John’s NYU, the Great Books St. John’s (two locations), and Thomas Aquinas are much more Catholic.

From what I can gather, the first three were more to your taste. I would apply to St. John’s in two years. Have you heard of Gonzaga? It’s in Washington, and could be a great choice for you.
