St. John's University

This morning there was a junior breakfast with the parents, and our school counselor was talking to us about colleges, the selection and application process, etc... And he gave us this magazine called American and College University, that is for international students wanted to apply to the US (and to some extent Canada). It had a lot of useful information, and 1 or 2 profiles for about 116 colleges. And I saw this university that really draw my attention.
St. John's University. It is a private catholic school but sponsored by the Vincintian Fathers. The main campus is in Queens, NYC, and it looked really good. But what really impressed me was the cost: International Student Budget: $16,000 for nine-month year?includes tuition, room and board, fees, books, and travel within the United States. And they also give all undergraduate freshmen a laptop to access the internet the University's wireless network and all sorts of things.
What can you guys tell me about this University? I want to study International Relations (or a related major), is this University any good? If any of you are studying in this University, what's it like? Etc...

this university is a 5minute drive away. I do not recomend this university for it's amazing academics or reputation.

Well I wouldnt reccommend it either. In NY id reccommend Fordham or NYU or Columbia instead if u really want the feel of New York.
St Johns is in queens but in suburban queens which is not as active. the campus if u look at it in google earth is right off the freeway and its not that big either.
Academically its good. It has descent programs. but prestige wise, its good in New York but nationally its not really well known.

Here are other schools u might liek:
- Boston U: expensive but unlike St Johns has a very good reputation.
- NYU
- University of Miami: expensive but very good prestige. hard to get in though. Lots of international students so u might like that.
- Loyola: lots of international students and its Jesuit which from ur post i think u like.

St. John's is a very good school academically, and it's actually well-known in the country due to its famous basketball program. However, the location is staid and boring, and not really that accessible to the rest of the city. I believe they have a satellite campus in downtown Manhattan.

Their basketball program is dying dude :D.. 'but its still there.
I wouldnt say the school is "very good academically" as its not even in the top 100 list of top national universities. However its a descent education and has a good name in NYC. IF u are looking at NYC, then St. Johns is a good school although NYU is a way better option as its truly in NYC and not in boring suburbia. Also St. Johns is a major commuter school. Only until rescently have they begun to establish housing.

If ur looking at top academics: then pick other schools with better name in the national top 100 list. The following schools have a ton of international students and are what i would consider very good schools some even top nationally:

NYU

Boston College (Jesuit) or Boston U

Loyola (Jesuit)

Syracuse

University of Miami

American University

Those schools have really good names in the U.S Some are even in the top 50 list of schools in the U.S:
- UMiami
- Boston College
- NYU
- Boston U

Id pick those over st. johns. they are harder to get into, but if u have at least B's and A's u should be able to get into some.
