I don’t ever bash schools and tread very carefully about judging anyone…but I have to say, in New York…Fordham is hugely more respected academically than St. Johns. They are not virtual twins. <p>As for the basketball game tonight at Rose Hill, its sold out. Rose Hill Gym will be rocking…a good thing, since Fordham has been to hell and back the last few seasons and now seems to be making strides in improving its program. St. John’s is also struggling but has more recent success. Its going to be a very good game and hopefully very close. I am also hopeful the fans for both teams behave themselves and acquit themselves like ladies and gentlemen.</p>

<p>The quality of students based on tests and admissions are not too far apart. Fordham and St. John’s both are based in the outer boros, with similar style campuses and are both actively trying to improve their regional and national reputations. The caliber of the programs make them peers and they are both NY’s premier catholic institutions. In fact, Fordham used to be called St. Johns many many years ago. Among colleges in NY, these two are closest in regards to reputation, campus environment, feel, etc. Don’t get me wrong, these are two solid schools with great histories.</p>

<p>Huuuuuge upset, especially considering where we have been the last two years…Pecora has these boys believing in themselves. And the Red Storm of St. Johns were talking trash all week about us and came into our house and were making a lot of noise…but we packed the house (and were scalping tickets!) and upset them. Great win for the Rams. Students stormed the court after the game! Havent seen that in years!</p>

<p>Yahoo…sorry, I am not going to get into it with you on these two schools. They are vastly different and the caliber of student at Fordham is much higher than St. John’s. Fordham was known as St. John’s college before it was run by the Jesuits. I don’t bash schools. So I am not going there. But Fordham has an outstanding Jesuit National Reputation and its SAT scores are higher than St. Johns by a bunch. </p>
<p>Fordham’s graduate programs and Law School are also ranked much higher than St. Johns. Not trying to sound arrogant. Just correcting the record here.</p>

<p>Fordham’s acceptance rate is 50% vs. St. John’s 43% according to US News. I dont think people consider a 100 score differnce in the SAT as a reason not to consider these two schools peers. I believe their maybe a 100 point difference in the SAT scores of Harvard and Yale but they are still peers, no? I think if you ask the average NYer he/she would see FU interchangeable with St. Johns based on prestige and reputation. With St. Johns acquisition of the College of Insurance, it now boasts a foothold in Manhattan and levelling the field a little. St. Johns educated many prominent politicians like Mario Cuomo, which gives it great prestige.</p>
<p>Other than that they’re both in NYC, I don’t see how they compare.</p>

<p>I would think that to at least some extent, the question is how do they compare in the minds of students and parents making application lists who DO NOT live in NYC. We considered both schools for S list, and St. Johns seemed lower in our minds and did not present any particular reason why they should be added to the list. YMMV</p>
<p>A few years ago when my D was looking into colleges, we did look at Fordham but not St. John’s. She attended Fordham with UConn being her second choice. Academically, those are comparable schools. St. John’s is a notch down from Fordham as Fordham is, perhaps, from Georgetown.</p>

<p>In the minds of NYorkers they are not the same. Not even close. Ask the kids at Fordham from Long Island, Connecticut, the Boroughs, New Jersey. You can think whatever you want, my friend, but that is simply not the case. </p>
<p>100-150 SAT points makes a huge difference. And that is just the average scores, not the top end. Fordham admits plenty of students with stats above 1350 who attend Fordham. </p>
<p>USNWR makes a huge differential between the schools. Not even in the same tier. </p>
<p>Again, this is not about knocking St. Johns. Its about clarifying the record for other readers so there is no confusion. We don’t claim to be Georgetown’s or BC’s equal, though we are closing fast. Another 100 avg. SAT points for us and we will be there. </p>
<p>Now if you want to study Insurance, then go ahead and do so at St. Johns and the best of luck to you in all your endeavors. Congrats. </p>

<p>@rickard0529 - I’d say Fordham is quite a few notches down from Georgetown – though they’re trying to catch up. I’d say Boston College is a notch down from Georgetown, with Fordham several notches away from BC.</p>

<p>NYmama, I would say that Georgetown and BC are one notch apart, as you say, but I don’t know if I agree with the idea that Fordham is far from them. If you look at national reputation (in the sense that, if you say the name of the three schools to someone from the Midwest or West, they will know what you’re talking about and know the caliber of the school) those two are undoubtedly better. I’m from the Midwest, and I only knew about Fordham because I went to a Jesuit high school.
However, academically, I do not think that BC is “quite a few notches” above Fordham. Additionally, the opportunities provided by Gabelli, in relation to Carroll, are arguably as good, if not greater. Being in New York and having such an alumni base will do that.
That being said, Fordham does have quite a bit further to go. It is one of the administration’s goals, as well as that of the leading students at the school, to grow ever closer to BC and those schools like it. I hope we can do so.</p>
