Son considering St. Louis U., but hasn't visited yet. Posts seem to be positive about the campus itself, but have seen mixed posts about area surrounding the campus. Any input would be appreciated.

You’ve tried the SLU forum, right?

The campus is fairly contained and has a beautiful park on one side, with the central west end, a lot of restaurants on the other. My daughter attended Wash U and we never felt she was unsafe. We also lived in St. Louis and to the west of Wash U there are some neighborhoods that are transitional, but again I always felt my daughter was safe.

My daughter feels safe there; I’ve also walked around at night alone on campus and felt absolutely fine too. Campus is kind of like a park in the middle of the city. Outside of campus certainly has its rough areas, but when she goes anywhere on the metro she is always with a group. Even with the protesters there last year (right outside her dorm), she still felt safe. Security was certainly apparent, especially during that time.
hey im a freshmen and the campus is completely safe, i have never felt unsafe, however i do carry peppr spray with me as a precationary but with SLU ride and DPS, youll never feel to unsafe, especially if you are with other people and don’t go into bad areas
We live in the suburbs nearby. I would say it is the same as any city location. You just need to be sensible. It’s a beautiful campus and Forest Park is awesome for running, biking and walking. Plus the zoo and several museums are right there. My D09 went to a state school in a small town in MO and she still carried pepper spray. You always have to be aware and use common sense. Good luck!
