St. Louis University - Opinions wanted

My son is a junior that wants to go to a Catholic school with good academics, then go on to medical school. I want him to consider schools that give good merit money, since need-based aid is doubtful. I believe he will get into Notre Dame (his siblings were both accepted), but merit money isn't done under the Golden Dome, and is also very tough to come by at Boston College. I need some options.

Can anybody tell me about their experiences with St. Louis University? They offer some full-tuition scholarships, have a med scholars program for undergraduates, and an Honors program. I'm interested in all of these, as well as ambiance on campus.

Thanks.

Darden are you talking about WUSTL? Washington University iN St. Louis?
They have some fantastic merit aid programs and their campus is supposed
to be really friendly adn great (never been there but heard about it from friends).

:)

Nope. St. Louis University is Nat U #82 in USN&WR, not as highly ranked as Wash U in St. Louis (#12), but it is a Catholic school, which is why we're interested. Might be too urban, but we're going to visit and find out.

My daughter applied, got accepted to their six-year physical therapy program, and received a nice merit scholarship (not full tuition -- she did not apply for that.)
Definitely urban. But a beautiful campus, nonetheless, with very, very nice facilities. Lots of kids from the Midwest (of course) and Texas. Health sciences are indeed a stand-out.
Very similar to Creighton in Omaha and Marquette in Milwaukee, two other midwestern Jesuit schools with very strong health sciences. One major difference -- SLU has a much larger endowment, more in the BC range than in Marquette's or Creighton's, and I hear it really shows in the recent improvements to campus.
We never visited. Daughter always preferred Marquette and when she got in there, decision was made. Marquette is very residential, not commuter, with a more highly ranked PT program and a strong Big East basketball team (spectator sports are important to her.) Closer to home for us, too (we are outside Chicago.) But I will say that Saint Louis was a class act throughout the admissions process and all our contacts with them were extremely positive.
Since we never visited, I'm not sure that I have a real read on the campus ambience, but what other families have told me is that SLU has a touch more of the "preppy, private high school kid" feel to it than Marquette. Take that for what it's worth.

Here is a nice recent post about SLU.

My daughter graduated from SLU in May. She was a presidential scholar, so she had a full tuition scholarship for 4 years. She had been accepted into higher ranked schools, but with no money. She found it very hard to turn down the scholarship.

She really did love the school. She has made some great friends. While she majored in business, she had at least 2 very good friends get into Med school. She also had several get into Law school.

She wanted to attend a school in an urban area that wasn't too big, nor too small. SLU fit the bill. She found the students friendly and down to earth. She also found the professors very approachable.

SLU has lots going for it. It just keeps improving in its stature. I think that it would be a great place for your son.
