The prompt to essay:
"During Interim, St. Olaf students pursue a single course, often of an interdisciplinary nature. If you could design your own Interim course today, what would it be?" 250-500 words.

I already have a pretty good idea of what I'm going to write, but I'm not sure if I should include why I would choose to design the course interweaved with personal interests and experiences, or if I should just describe the course and how I would incorporate different disciplines.

I would really appreciate insight from current St. Olaf students and how they went about this short essay, but anyone is welcomed to answer!!

I would definitely make it as personal as you can. The admissions officers want to see what makes you tick, not read a lengthy course catalog. That being said, it should flow & be well-written too, so don’t force it if you can’t fit it.

We had the same prompt last year & I wrote a persuasive essay on why my super awesome interim course should be created & how it would benefit the students & the world (ambitious, I know ). It was on the same topic as my personal statement, & I had devoted major extracurricular time to it too (700+ hours), so I didn’t feel the need to describe as much personal stuff though.

I would love to read your essay & help edit it, if you need it. I looooove editing. :)

Oh, and great choice in applying to St. Olaf. I’m a super insanely excited member of the class of 2014 and I’m soooo ready for summer to be over so I can move in. (We just got roommates today, so I’m a little hyper.) Have you visited yet? Any more questions? I’d be happy to keep you updated once the school year starts. Um Ya Ya!!!

Hi, I just finished my essay for this prompt as well. If you wouldn’t mind, I would love to get some feedback on it. Unforunately, I already submitted it, so suggestions are welcomed but I cannot use them. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. :)

Feel free to send me the essay over pm; I’d love to see what a possible future Ole has written! I’ll definitely try to comment helpfully. Happy New Year!

Hi! I thought about this one for a while. I’m going to be a Biology or Chemistry major, with the intention of going to medical school, so I’m obviously very interested in the sciences, and I showed that in my Interim essay.
I wrote about something that was interesting to me, namely the effects of psychology on health. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but I think the power that the brain has in physically changing the body is fascinating. Oh well, just my $.02.
What did you all choose? I would love to hear some other ideas, even though I applied a long time ago. I thought this was an interesting essay.

Hello,
I am currently applying as a transfer to St. Olaf and I was wondering if you could proofread my Interim short-essay? I will send it to you once I receive a reply confirming that you’re okay to edit it.

I submitted mine in late December. I am in interested in Economics and Sociology so I created a course that included both disciplines in a cohesive way… It was fun to write. I am from Jamaica, so sociological economic issues are natural. :D
