@longdistancemum : what did your daughter decide?
Sorry for the delayed reply. Just realised this question was here.
She decided in the end to go to Queen’s University Canada. In the end she felt she really wanted to be able to do both engineering and a BA from the get-go, which she can do at Queen’s. She has grown up quite a bit over the last few months as she has been working since she finished high school at the end of last year so she felt that she will be fine and can make her way in a bigger university environment fine. Also the fact that she is a dual national and doesn’t need a visa is helpful, as well as the generous scholarship which is essentially full-tuition. She is aware that the first semester could be a bit COVID- restricted still, but we are encouraged by the pace of the vaccine rollout in Ontario.
Thank you everyone for the advice and assistance!
Thank you for letting us know!
Wow, from St Olaf and Denison to Queen’s, that’s a huge 180 degree . But if she wants engineering, really the best choice, especially for the price.
Congratulations!
Let us know how it goes (this thread will close September 30 only, if there’s no activity, so there’ll be time for an update.)
Denison University has a 5 Telephone rating in the Fiske Guide To Colleges 2020.
From the Fiske Guide: “It can be assumed that a college with a rating of five [telephones] is something of a party school…”
This assessment is backed up on another website based on student responses (unigo dot com).
But, according to student comments on another website, the school has been cracking down on parties. Main complaints focus on the Greek system & on cliquishness of students.
Denison works for most students, but–as with any small LAC–fitting in with the campus culture is important.
Queen’s is a great choice.
Thanks - if it had been a small LAC it would have been St Olaf as we had decided that it was the better fit for her. I am still a bit torn as I thought she would have had a great education there and as a parent I think she would have benefitted from the small classes and attention. However I agree that wasn’t necessary and I am sure she will thrive at Queen’s too. The Fiske guide was very positive about it and we were impressed by the online sessions we attended to explain the engineering school. It seemed very well organised and caring.
Congratulations! All the best with the new enterprise.
Congrats to your daughter. I hope she enjoys her time at Queens!
For what it’s worth, if Queen’s turns out to be the wrong fit, I’m pretty sure that she could try and transfer to St Olaf, although probably without a scholarship or without as much of a scholarship. Since costs are so much lower with Queen’s it’s probably a wash for you financially.
Hopefully of course it’ll work out with the BA/B.Eng
