St. Paul's School Concord NH

Yes creative1. According to the informational bookmark that I received at my interview their average SSAT score for enrolled 2008 students was 88%, but yet the average SSAT score was 2075. That is very impressive!

yeh, my tour guide sed he got below 80% on his SSAT's but they loved the rest of his application. i got a 2240 (95%) so i hope that will help me. i loved the campus. especially the lakessssss... if i get in (im praying) my number ne priority will be to skateon those ponds. they were where the first american ligitimized hockey game was played! just after the sport was invented in montreal, they came down to new hampshire... it would be really memorable just to stand on that ice.

we30, have you seen Hobey Baker's skates in the captains room at the ice rink?

We30: I hope you know the background of the Rector (Bill Matthews) and hockey. NH Hall of Fame etc. http://www.sps.edu/common/news_detail.asp?newsid=240851&L1=&L2=&tabs=news

And the ponds are especially great if you get Black Ice.

we30, you soun like a hardcore hockey kid.

haha you could say that... im a goalie on the state team, east coast select team, US olympic development team, im the best in new england, 2nd best in the east, 5th best in the country... i have two kids on my team that are in the top 10 players in the country... my team is 4th in the country =) ... hahah... im just big.. 5'9 165... still growing alot. so yeh, and my hole family plays hockey(brother does, both sisters play, my mom plays too! haha)

catg, i havent been in the locker rooms, but that sounds amazing.... i skated on the rinks, they have really hard ice, which is nice for a goalie. and Winterset, thats why i think i should have a good chance, the hockey team isnt the best, but they seem like a big sport at the school.

what'd mean by black ice... do you mean when you can see all the way to the bottom and its all dark , cuz we call that "seeing the whole 9 feet."

Black ice is pretty much transparent and very slick.

we30...will you be able to keep playing hockey at that level at SPS? I mean the year round club stuff that you need to get into a top DI hockey school. I just ask because we are really struggling to balance soccer with bs and I really feel like soccer is taking a hard hit. Be careful....if we knew then what we know now, we might have done things a bit differently. My son will be heart-broken if his soccer goals (no pun intended) don't become a reality.

If you are good, I am sure the school will make it work. Just ask them.
Here was a press release from last month. Oh, and school had started 5 days earlier! So, hey you can do what you have to do.

And you never know when recruiters will show up: St. Paul's School Read for other NHL/ISL players.
So, if you are serious (and concerned) just ask the admissions people. Asking will never hurt.

Black Ice video: https://www.sps.edu/podium/tools/SlideShow.aspx?a=44327&ttl=2009+Black+Ice+Pick-Up+Hockey Coed pick-up hockey. Here it is no longer 'black', but usually it is the first really hard freeze of the winter. Black because it is clear, and with luck it is flawlessly smooth (better than what a zamboni can do)!

And here's a past write-up specific to male hockey palyers at SPS playing outside of SPS in the Nationals last year:
St. Paul's School

keylyme - I get the impression that BS hockey is stronger in general than BS soccer. I do know, however, there are soccer players at SPS that play for some better NH club teams in the Spring and Summer and who also do NH ODP. I image it definitely takes some juggling and commitment on their part as I know schedules are already very full.

i have to give up hockey to go to SPS, Andover, or Exeter, because they are all atleast 3 hours away. i already have to drive an hour to practice, but thats just the normal season (august to march), but the spring season i can play for the Olympic Developement program and East Coast Selects and other teams, because they just play two or threee big tournaments and a few allstar camps. ill probably just play for school team, at a few schools i could probably play varsity by 2nd year, cuz ill be about 6'0 185

might double roster and play nationals... but if i dont get into any of those schools, but i get into choate, i can play full year round... if i dont get into choate, i go to public high school and just play hockey all year.

ODP in soccer is fairly meaningless now with the advent of the US Soccer Development Academy. And there is pretty much only one major club in NH...and it is not so close to SPS. So, yes, bs and soccer are a difficult combo even there. To play Academy, you have to commit to three evenings per week of practice and a 32 game schedule which has you all over your region (region = 1 quadrant of the country). Season runs from November to July. Showcases in Cali in December and Florida in May (changes yearly). My son participated non-academy last year and even though he played premier for the one of the best clubs in the region, none of the top DI programs were at their showcases or tournies. Academy got all the looks. I know hockey is different, but I do know that to be at the top of your sport (there are rare exceptions...but for the most part), you have to commit to pretty much year round play with a top club. (Football is an obvious exception here).
I'm not saying it's not worth it....an education at a top bs is an invaluable thing, but I know firsthand how difficult it is when you excel at something and have put so much time and effort into it for most of your life AND you know you really have the ability to go far.

I hear that SPS has a truly fantastic soccer program. They play Eton College! WOW! The soccer coch contacted me a few weeks ago, asking if I wanted to fill out this special interest soccer form.

removed post - don't want to turn this into a thread about NH soccer but if you look at D1 rosters you'll find many BS/prep school studnets.

Can anybody answer me this? When I talked to my interviewer from Exeter, he told me there was a snowboarding program where you go up the mountains to snowboard during lunch on specific days. This must've been about 30-40 years ago? I'm wondering if the tradition is still around and which places is the best place to Snowboard around the NH area.

Exeter? Well maybe sledding or lunch trays, when they have snow. Ski areas? Here is a map of NH areas: http://www.kenjonesskimart.com/images/skiarea_map.gif The problem is that SE NH is flat (and gets less snow). Might want to ask them again....and find out where and vertical drop.

Now St. Paul's does have both Alpine and Nordic SKIING (varsity sport), but not a snowboarding team. Having said that, they practice at Pat's Peak (20 minutes), where there is a terrain park. The school runs a bus there, but I don't know about snowboarding.
