The only school that I am aware of that states they have special admissions reviews for athletes or artists is Deerfield. I am sure there are others. Other schools can and will recruit specific athletes for specific sports depending on the year but may not be as open about it. However, these situations are generally reserved for stellar athletes. In fact, if you review the coach’s recommendation form for most schools including SPS- the categories are daunting: exceptional: = “game changer- best athlete I’ve ever seen”; very good- a varsity player; good- could be varsity in time; average, novice, etc. My guess is that sports alone may not be the hook for SPS, but definitely reach out to the coaches. The more boxes you can tick on the application and the more people you have pulling for you can only be positive- providing the rest of the application is solid. SPS is a top tier school and competition for admission is extremely tough. As can be read on many threads, dont make all your choices a “reach”, pick some “safety” schools (if those really exist!). Good luck

pjkv76… Assuming your son qualifies academically, sports will definitely help. The talent pool is so deep and broad that any differentiator will be noticed. Craig Vandersea coaches both football and baseball. He is also on the admissions committee. Any time you can spend with him could make a difference.

Thanks guys. We are meeting the Baseball coach on Monday and the football coach in two weeks … we will go from there !

I case you haven’t looked lately, I just discovered that the photos of new students are now posted in the student directory. Time to check out your new classmates!

^^^^further information…my daughter was looking around on the site and realized that you can see what dorm you’re in. If you go to the SPS Directory you can view it by dorm and see who is where.

please check this out and answer any questions if possible.

Has anybody received the course placement package yet?

not as of yesterday

House/roommate/adviser info is available on the parents’ portal. :)

Thanks creative1, we found it!

Please bear with me everyone as I start getting ready to order stuff…

I’ve seen suggestions on other threads about getting a memory foam mattress topper. How are the beds at SPS? Is something like this necessary for comfort?

And a specific question - when I was at SPS there were dorms with built-in closet units (at the time they were the newer dorms). My D is in a dorm like that. Is there any storage space provided beyond those units? Do people still hang a curtain in front of the closet area since there’s no closet door on them?

friendlymom -

the mattresses are plastic coated and not super cozy so some sort of mattress topper is definitely a plus. Personally, I don’t like the memory foam material and my kids have been happy with something along the lines of this: [Stearns & Foster® Covington Plush Luxe Down Alternative Fiberbed, 100% Cotton, 600 Thread Count - Bed Bath & Beyond](http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=126594&)

The types of closets vary from house to house and the size from room to room. Feel free to PM me which house your daughter is in and, if I am familiar with the set-up in that particular building, I can let you know.

We see the house and advisor, but roommate is listed as: none. Is that really possible for a third form student? Or they just haven’t listed/decided yet?

Some of the dorms are mostly singles (especially the Quad dorms - Brewster, Ford, Manville, Simpson) - so it seems conceivable that a III former would end up without a roommate. Did your child request a single?

There are singles for 3rd formers - especially boys. More boys singles on campus than girls, I believe. If it is listed as “none”, then yes, your child does have a single.

creative1 you are so helpful to us newbs!

They also listed a voicemail number but it’s only 4 digits. I assume everyone’s number has the same first 3 digits - what are they?

Fm (603) 230-…

Thanks sk8.

Another question: How does it work if you’re doing a sport that doesn’t have a club option, but you’re fairly new to the sport? Do they make any cuts at the JV level in sports like that?

Another post…I found a handy item on the Parent Portal that’s called the “Academic Calendar” which has now been updated for 2012-2013. It gives a really good idea of the day-by-day flow and schedule. It has the schedule for the drop-off day for new students, and the days immediately following.

Based on how teary I got just reading the “3:30-4:30 Parents and New Students say goodbye at houses” item I can tell that this farewell isn’t going to be easy…

Now that students have housing information and course enrollments the start of school is feeling very close. Does anyone have advice on whether and which laundry plan to get for a girl? Do most girls do their own laundry or get the service?

A question that combines sports and laundry: can and do students have their practice clothes washed at the gym, or do they wash them themselves? Do girls ever shower at the gym, or just go back to the dorm? I imagine the school washes uniforms.

Unless someone knows which sports have a no cut policy, I think asking the school directly is the best way to find out. Some schools have thirds teams that allow the student to try the sport with no cuts, but St. Paul’s doesn’t.
