Have any third former’s read The Odyssey yet? If so what do you think about it? :)

I am an incoming freshman at SPS. I started to read the Odyssey. It is a good book, so far. The book has a lot to do with Greek Mythology and it would be easier if you have a little background knowledge on it. Other that that, it is a good read. You should start reading it now.

Cool. I started reading a week or two ago. I’m trying to read slow and take notes so that I don’t forget anything. I learned Greek Mythology in seventh grade when learning about the Ancient Romans in social studies and we all read The Adventures of Odysseus in language arts, so I understand the story pretty well. Are you excited to start school?

YEAH! I am so excited, but a little nervous. I am also reading the book slowly because how of how the book is worded, but I get what is going on. I never learned about the Ancient Romans and Greek Mythology, but reading books like Percy Jackson and other greek myth books I didn’t find myself that lost. Are you also excited for school?

YES!!! I’m a little nervous too. Its going to be really weird to wake up and not have to argue with my sister about who gets to shower first. (not that I’m complaining) I’m looking forward to being in a school with 545 students in the whole school instead of 545 students in one grade, my old public school’s hallways always seemed like a fire hazard with the massive overflow of kids all trying to go the same way. I’m also not going to miss being hit in the face with people’s backpacks, that was never a good time. I think The Odyssey is a little bit of uncommon ground for everyone, which is cool because that means that we’ll all be on the same page sort of. Do you play any sports?

OMG!! It will be different. I have two annoying little brothers that won’t be there to wake me up when I sleep in. lol But I also went to a public school but it was small with about 50 students per grade. Hearing you say 545 students per gade makes me feel claustrophobic. I play basketball and volleyball. But, at SPS I am also goign to try crew. WHat sports do you play?

I have a little brother who’s really annoying. But now he usually watches minecraft videos on youtube all day, so he’s out of my face a little more. My big sister is all college happy so she just stays in her room looking for dorm decorations. You’re so lucky, school would have been so much easier if I had 50 other classmates. I play basketball too! What position do you play? I also dance, but I hate ballet so I’m not going to audition for the SPSBC. I’m thinking about playing volleyball and possibly doing track, but I hate running so that isn’t really too smart.

OMGG !! My little brother also watches minecraft videos 24/7. Lol I laughed when I read that. But, I play as a center in basketball. How about you? I also want to decorate my room a lot . I don’t want it to be dull lol. What dorm do you want to live in?

We have so much in common…that’s creepy. Just Kidding. I play forward. I used to play center but then my coach got tired of the refs calling three seconds on me every time we had the ball… oops? But to be a center you must be tall and have a lot of energy I give you props. claps I don’t want my room to be dull either, so I’m going to cover the wall with so many pictures you can’t see it anymore. I actually don’t know what dorm I want to live in I would say Kehaya but its far away from everything, and I’m lazy so… Any cool stories/memories from your revisit? I went on April 4th-5th hbu?

Lol we do have a lot in common, and thanks about the playing center thing. I think playing forward is just as important. But i went to the April 1-2 revisit. It was so awesome . I didnt want to leave at the end. I also want to live in Kehaya because its so nice. but one of the people there said that u have to get ready 10 minutes earlier because its kind of a long walk. But what languages do you want to learn?

No problem, and thanks. My revisit was pretty epic. There were a lot of people from my state and a couple from other countries. I remember my revisit host showed me a dorm that was nice, but i don’t think it was Kehaya because it was pretty close to the dining hall. ( I love food so that seemed like a nice dorm for me :P) I already took french in middle school even though my mom told me to take Spanish. (I’m a rebel) But I don’t know if I’ll continue french or goes to Spanish or Latin. How about you?

I sent you a private message.

just out of curiosity, where do most girls shop? and when it is still warm, do girls mostly wear shorts or skirts to classes?

livy, my daughter’s favorite stores are Urban Outfitters (for jeans and dresses especially) and J. Crew. A year ago you couldn’t have paid her to go into J. Crew but her look has gotten preppier at SPS. For wintertime, Bean boots (from LL Bean) are a favorite.

I wouldn’t buy a lot of warm weather clothing right now. Just bring what you already have since you’ll only wear it for a month at most at the beginning of the year. By the time it warms up again in spring your tastes might have changed.

Another topic: housing. For new students, you can figure out what dorm you’re in if your parents sign in and you search the directory by house. From the Parents Portal, click on the “SPS Directory” link and then use the drop-down menu to see who’s in each house. Full housing information is supposed to be up on August 1 and I think you can find out your roommate and adviser then.

thank you so much friendlymom!!! That was so helpful :)… but when girls do wear shorts, do you think the J. Crew 3 inch inseam shorts are a good length or are those too short? and what type of shirts can you wear in warm weather?

I don’t think anyone is out there with a ruler measuring whether the shorts meet dress code length. 3 inch should be all right. For class, shirts are supposed to have sleeves or a collar (or both).

thank you!! and does anyone have any insight on the Kitt dorms?

If anyone is trying to choose a book bag, according to my daughter Herschel backpacks are a popular choice for girls.

I was just trying to think of the brand name of those backpacks! Do you know which styles because grandmother has just asked for gift ideas?

All of the dorms are pretty nice (at least compared to many college dorms) and all have their good and bad aspects. Kitt rooms and common areas are not the biggest or most charming, but the location is convenient. The faculty and students in the dorm are at least as important as the building in determining what the dorm is like.
