Hi,

Just wondering if there is any way to get a subsidized stafford loan if dartmouth did not provide one in the financial aid. Thanks.

That’s a question for financial aid. Since Dartmouth is providing full aid without a loan, I’m not sure they can add a loan on top of that, since then the aid would be greater than the determined need. I assume the question is regarding how to pay the family contribution. You might need a PLUS loan for that, but it is worth running it by finaid.

Actually, they sent out a paper where you could ask to have some of your EFC replaced with a loan. Don’t know if you get a Stafford or a loan from the college though but you should’ve received that paper.

I have received the paper and have sent in my reply as well but I have yet to receive word on whether or not there has been a loan given.

Stafford loans can replace part of EFC, summer earnings, and term time earnings.
The only issue, I think, is that Dartmouth’s grant, outside scholarships, summer and term time earnings don’t exceed the cost of attendance.
In my son’s case, he used a Stafford to save up for summer money so that he could do an unpaid internship he wanted. Bad decision, IMO, but Dartmouth had no problems. He added more Stafford money once again when finances got tight and, for various reasons, he didn’t want to devote too much time to work study.
Two lessons here. You can very likely borrow plenty. And my son has learned that “live for today” isn’t necessarily the best policy.
If you can possibly swing it, the “no loan” advantage is a valuable thing to forfeit.
