Do you have to be "offered" a Stafford unsubsidized loan by your college, or can you just submit an application?

I think if you fill out the Fafsa within the time frame the school requires, you will be offered an unsubsidized Stafford when your award package is communicated to you.

Also, does anyone know what the lender processing fees are on unsubsidized Staffords? Looks like they used to be 4% but have now been reduced over the past 3 years. I’m trying to fill out a payment plan form for the school my d will be starting at in the fall.

we submitted everything on time, but have not been offered anything.

Call the FA office and tell them you want one. They will have the student go through some FA tutoring on the impact of loans and interest.

S’s school is a financial aid “no-loan” school but because of the difference in computing need, he has a gap. The last two years he was able to fill with outside scholarships but this year, not quite. I emailed his financial aid office asking about loans and they offered Sub-Stafford and/or Perkins. We just have to let them know if he decides to borrow and they will process.

Call.
