Stamps Scholarship Campus Interview Day

My son was accepted in September… did not receive a Chancellor’s invite but was invited to apply for the Stamps full ride scholarship. He had a Skype interview in December and just found out he is one of 16 semi-finalist advancing to the next round. We are heading back to Pitt February 18th to meet with the interview panel. Does anyone have any insight or advice concerning what he will be asked?

Also, He has not been offered any merit $ from Pitt to date… I expected something when he was accepted. If he doesn’t get the Stamps scholarship will he be offered anything??

His stats:
2090 SAT
730 Math
680 CR
680 Writing

top 5% of class of 250 (not ranked)
4.0 GPA
all honors/AP

Student government
OOTM (8 years)
4 years varsity soccer
4 years varsity track.

Any info/insight/advice appreciated. We are soo excited!

My understanding is that merit $ is mostly based on the SAT and GPA scores. Stamps may pay more attention to leadership. It is very difficult to be selected as a semifinalist. Congrats and good luck to your son!

I have no idea, my D never made it to the interview phase.

I would suggest to just be himself and maybe talk about his leadership activities, depending on what they ask.

The threshhold for Stamps was a bit lower I believe than for Honors College scholarships.

So I’m not sure if he would get an academic scholarship or not.

At this moment and among all 16 highly selective and competitive (leadership, academic merit, or both) semi-finalists, no one could do anything to elevate, just be himself with the chance of 5/16. This is the most generous scholarship offered by Pitt and hard to be beaten by other colleges. Your S must be something exceptional excluding the academic merits. Congratulations and GL

Thank you for the kind words… We are blown away by this and keep telling him that the opportunity to interview is valuable in its own right.

Thank you

How did your son find out that he was a semifinalist? Email or through a letter?

He received an email from the Pitt representative he skyped with telling him he was moving to the next round and that a hotel room was being reserved for us on Feb 18th. All notification concerning this scholarship has come by email to my son’s account, not mine. We are totally shocked and absolutely thrilled!!!

Is there anyone who attended Campus Interview day last year that could provide some info. I read a detailed version of the Stamps day at Tulane but I’m sure Pitt does it a bit differently.

If we’ve only received news inviting us to apply to the Honors College, does this mean that Pitt’s not considering me for any merit scholarships? Has anyone received notice about anything besides Stamps?

@luciagrande, Scholarship award letters are going out weekly through March 1st. You may still hear from us.

Best,
A Pitt Admissions Staffer
