stand out

What a whirlwind of comments....I say do some research project showing that you want to be a doctor or be a research assistant

i think dermatology is great, im considering it

Derm. is one of the best fields currently. Low hours, short residency, good pay. Fairly "easy" work. But thats why its one of the hardest, if not the hardest residency to get today

aha i already have an office if i go into it!

I sware, the doctor showed it to me, shes all like...if u become a derm, this is yours, u can hold me to it

its very tempting

so what u guys think about Dental School, Low hours, decent pay?

if ur into dentistry, go for it. Its definatly easier to have a personal life as a dentist, no midnight runs to the hospital. But u also gotta rely on ur practice, which can be difficult or successful, depending on how established ur clientel is.

any opinions on being a pediatrician?

if ur gonna go into a private practice...u wont make alot of $ for the same reasons as we said before...insurance is gonna control u. But $ isnt what its all about, i think it can be very rewarding and fun. But also tragic at times.

IM takin pre cal
and ap euro

could u please suggest what actions i need to make so in the future i could attend such BA/MD programs at

USC
UCSD
UKMC
etc

im asian(indian)

plus 4.0 throughout middle school

hoping to become a biofinancialist err or cardivacular surgeon

BA/MD programs want to see your passion for medicine, and that you have experience in the area. As a grade 9 student, there probably isn't too much you can do (at least in my area, most places require you to be at least 16 before they let you volunteer), but you can try or at least keep your eyes open. You can volunteer at hospitals, nursing homes, other medically-related organizations, and job shadow physicians. Also, work hard in school, take the most rigorous course load that you can handle, and try to get good grades. Don't stress out though; you have grade 11/12 to do that!

and ive already put in 75 hours at the los angeles free clinic and homeless shelters

im 13

SAT II's in sciences and math 750+, do well on SAT's, do activites where u show ur interested in medicine (and i dont mean pushing wheelchairs at the hospital lol)

and finally...i think u really need to consider why u want to be a doctor at this point. That is most important for you right now, because as a freshman, im gonna bet it has sumthing to do with either your parents or the prestige of being a doctor. Keep your GPA up and take VERY VERY tough courses, as many AP's as you can handle, no study halls!

You really need to get into it so you see what its really like. Shadow doctors or do EMS as ive done. I knew tons of kids like you who joined EMS because they wanted to be doctors, they changed interests because they couldnt handle the stress...its alot of responsibility to have a life in your hands and most dont realize that, nor can they handle it.

I think it would be good for any1 considering medicine who is just starting HS. You need to get in on it early. Its not worth it after soph year because the training is too much.

thanks ill keep that in mind

Doogie, out of curiosity, in your state, how old do you have to be before you can join EMS? What do you do?
I'm just curious because in my area, you have to be 18 before you can take your EMR (Emergency Medical Responder), and in order to work with EMS in the city, you need your EMT (Emergency Medical Technician)certification in addition to the EMR.

and i scored 700 math and 650 enlgish

do most students scores go up as they progress thru highschool

and for tjhe purpose of standing out
next summer and christmas break i willl be volunteering in hospitals in India will that give any boost at all?

ya i live in NY, and over here u can be 15 to join an agency as a social member, 16 to actually get on an ambulance, and you can also take the NYS certified First Responders course, and 18 to take the EMT. Its actually left up to the individual volunteer EMS agencies as to whether they will allow youth members or CFR's to join. Chnces are you will find that its common, but if u come across ones that dont have a youth division they will let u join as a CFR as long as you get ur EMT.

The NYS DOH allows 16 yr olds to ride on an ambulance as long as they are certified in Hazmat, blood bourne pathogens, CPR (by the AHA), Weapons of Mass Destruction awareness, and fit testing (shows you how to wear a tuberculosis mask).

Once you are on a volunteer agency, you basically just observe. But once you start picking up how to do certain things, you can put that into practice. For instance, hooking up O2 masks, basic first aid. Depending on your agency of course, and what they allow.

Since im a CFR (certified first responder), i can do basically everything an EMT does, i just cant treat a patient by myself in an ambulance. If im on my own i can, but in the 9-1-1 system i cant.

Ive done CPR many times before, ive helped deliver a baby (yes i caught...god help me that was quite an experience), ive seen alot and learned alot. Ive been doin it for about 3 years now, and chances are ive seen close to anythin u can think of...gun shots, bad traumas, medical emergencies. I do alot too, because im trained by the state and have alot of experience. Lol im basically at that point where i control the calls while the EMT just does the paperwork.

In the cities, yes you have to be 18 and an EMT.

so i cant do that im in calli(just asprominent)

well go check it out with your local EMS agency, if you are in a suberb and its volunteer, they may have something for you.
