Standardized Testing Advice?

I'm a junior among the thousands who took the SAT in March. I did well, with a score I was happy with. However, my verbal score was significantly lower than my math and writing. Certainly I know I'm capable of a few more points. I'm considering applying to the top schools next year, but I'm not a huge fan of standardized tests. I'd like to minimize the total number I'm taking for many reasons - money, time, etc...

So, what is a good idea? Retake the SAT with hopefully a higher verbal score and change an "acceptable" score at the top schools to a "attractive" score? Or do as my counselor advises and the ACT? Or neither?

Thanks.

I had this question last year from Masamune over on Brand X. My answer then, and anyway my answer now, is figure out what else you're doing to boost your application. If you have time to read a lot over the summer, that reading and your own getting a little older and a little more experienced with the SAT I verbal section might raise your score enough to be worthwhile.
