Standardized Testing

Ok, so I've taken both the SAT and the ACT, but I'm not really sure which to submit. My overall ACT is a little better than my overall SAT and my ACT math score is much higher...but I did much better on the SAT essay and I scored 800's in verbal and writing.

I sort of want to send both my SAT's and my ACT, but I don't know if that's a waste of money... would they even look at both, or would they just take the test with the higher score and only look at that?

And finally, the Wesleyan site says SAT II's aren't required if you submit the ACT, but I got pretty good scores on them. Should I send those scores when I apply, or will they not consider them?

Hope someone can help! And is anyone else having trouble deciding which test to use too?

what are the scores?

oops! :P

ok, SAT- v:800, m: 660, w: 800 (11 on the essay), overall 2260

ACT- english: 34, math: 34, reading: 35, science: 31, combined english/writing: 31 (8 on the essay), composite: 34

oh and sat II’s

world history: 780, bio e: 760, us history: 760

it’s an interesting situation. the pair of 800s certainly make the eyes pop. OTOH, if you want to maintain the conceit that you are an “all-round” scholar, the 34 ACT is quite impressive in its own right. It’s your decision, but, it probably makes sense to choose one over the other. btw, what is “bio e” is that just regular bio or was it a typo?

John:
The SAT II in biology has two parts. Everyone takes the first part which is general and has all types of biology on it. The second part of the test is in either “E” (ecology) or “M” (molecular) and the student chooses which to take. When the score comes back, the test is denoted as Biology M or Biology E. I suspect this is done because different schools often stress one over the other. The first half of the test which everyone takes contains elements of both M and E. Our DD’s 9th grade honors bio (school ditched AP designations about 10 years ago) was entirely molecular. But when she and her friends studied for the SAT II, they self-taught the E.

submit both, they take what in their eyes is the better score. I had terribly low sats but 33 act and im almost positive they select whichever test is better and submit it to the admissions people

This may sound silly but have you considered retaking the SAT I exam? Given your ACT score, it’s odd you didn’t do better on math and they will take your highest score on all three sections (so you get to keep your pair of 800s). My daughter had two high SAT parts and one much lower. I convinced her to retake focusing just on the section and it went up more than 100 points. She said she was totally relaxed just focusing on that one section. As you probably know, your scores are great for Wesleyan. They will already be a strong plus factor in your file. Even with the surge in admissions last year, Wesleyan’s overall scores didn’t really budge (I think). Good luck.

I actually feel sort of silly now! That’s a really good idea, MOMH20. I think I’ll take give myself a few weeks to cram for math and take the October SAT.

Does anyone know about the SAT II’s though? Will they consider them even if I do end up sending my ACT scores?
