Stanford 2008 Transfer

I was under the impression that last year was somewhat of an anomaly?

Nope. I think they’ll accept 20ish from now on.

This is what she told me:

“There is a Transfer Visit Day on August 14th and I encourage you to attend if you are able. We will provide housing for the night of August 13th, but you will be responsible for your transportation.”

So I guess you would have to pay your way there. I don’t think I’ll go.

Oh. Where do you live? Is it super expensive to fly?

My ticket is like 300+ I think?

Hey Bourne, what’s your major?

i’m so jealous of you guys..do you think they’ll accept more transfer next year cause 3 years ago, they accpeted about 50…

I wouldn’t count on Stanford accepting more than 20 next year mainly because with Stanford’s new financial aid offer (families under 60K a year/low assets pay almost nothing) that many students that may have not considered applying to Stanford will doso now. Further to the point, I am guessing that more students that in the past who got accepted into Stanford but didn’t get a good enough financial aid package and did not/could not accept will accept. I don’t have enough information to know if Stanford is getting a higher yield in their freshman class, but I have a feeling that it is the case now. Higher yield/retention in freshmen class = less room for transfers.

Two years in a row of only 20 transfers…hmm… I unfortunately sense that this will continue.

Annika

As soon as I found out I got accepted, I quickly got on a flight to visit Stanford. I brought my final transcript along to give to the office of admissions while I was there.

When I handed her my transcript and told her I was an accepted transfer, she told me I was one of 20 (I honestly thought they were going to accept a %^$# ton this year, considering the numbers from last year). She said that they desperately wanted to accept more transfers, but were just unable to.

And since I know someone will ask…

Stats:
Previous university: Purdue, freshman
Major: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
GPA: 4.0
ACT: 32
SAT Math II: 790
SAT Physics: 780
etc…

and somehow Stanford’s admissions this year reminded me of this picture
http://farm2.static.■■■■■■■■■■/1079/830897176_dad55f068d_o.jpg

your so lucky..what was your high school stats and what ec did you do?

Bourne,

East coast… so ~400 as well. I 'm not planning on going there on transfer day. I figure I’ll read the Approaching Stanford Handbook cover to cover… that should answer any questions I may have.

So i created a group on fb… here’s the link. I left it open so anyone can join.

Facebook;

Annika, it could be worse. Due to all the fin aid offers at increase of applications, I’m worried that Stanford might even stop accepting transfers like Harvard and Princeton in a few years…:(

grass and Roflwaffles, may I PM you guys with some questions?

been following this thread for a while…
just wondering if it is even worth applying for me to stanford, but i really want to try and go there… I have average stats, (3.9 GPA, econ major, volunteering, dance for 15 years, all other random stuff..)
THe only thing i think would even give me a small shot would be my essays. I have some good ideas, or what I think are good ideas, that would differentiate me from the rest of the pool. Is it a good idea to talk how you can bring different culture to a university/
what do you guys think?

I was in the same boat this transfer season…

I ended up deciding it wouldn’t even be worth the time, money, and effort considering the 1.5% acceptance rate and the fact that I had already transferred once. I feel like it ended up being the right choice after everyone reported their decisions…I think there were around two acceptances total.

If you don’t mind putting in the time and money, then I guess you don’t really have anything to lose.

You have a shot, just not a very reliable one as no one really does at Stanford.

As far as talking about culture goes, I think it could go either way. On the one hand it is important, but on the other, it isn’t very creative. The admissions people might think you are relying on your ethnic background too much. I guess it depends on which side you think will give you a better chance. Obviously I, a long with most people on this board, can’t give you a great answer, but that’s just my opinion.

supindy, sure you can PM me if you have any questions.

yea barcelonista… i was thinking the same thing you said… but my friends keep saying you wont know if you dont try and taht this is your chance, and i kind of agree with them

any body else?

If you think you’re competitive…

Yeah, I def. see where you’re coming from, especially as I’ve always been a person who constantly asks “what if?”

The truth is, I never will know for sure. But I’m okay with that. I decided to devote my time and money to applying to Penn and was fortunate to get in there. I guess maybe that makes it easier to look beyond Stanford.

But for me, when it came down to it, it wasn’t Stanford or bust. In fact, a big reason why I was considering it was the weather. (spend 19 years living in Minneapolis and this will seem a lot less ridiculous.) Of course, it is a great school, and top 3 in my intended major (IR), but all things considered, I realized that it was something that I wouldn’t regret never trying to do.

If you really have your heart set on it and you know you always will wonder, I would say by all means go for it. I mean, it will cost you around $100, and a couple more essays. That’s like a day and a half of work for the money, and a week or so for the essays. It really isn’t a huge sacrifice.

Any responses for those on the waitlist?

I’ve just been accepted off of the waitlist. What the heck am I going to do? My wife and I have already placed a deposit for an apartment in Manhattan, and I’ve accepted an offer of admission to Columbia GS. I feel like I’m going to barf.

Aneece, let me be the first to say congratulations. You came on here and almost everyone told you to not even think about applying to schools like Stanford but you know what? You’re going to be going there next year and they aren’t (if you can get out of your lease)

Your story is truly inspirational and if anyone deserves it it’s you. Congrats.
