Yes, I (class of 2006) do not need to take the new SAT

Students applying to Stanford for Fall 2006, we will accept a student's highest individual verbal score and math score from either the old SAT I, the new SAT I, or a combination of the two exams.

Stanford has always taken an applicant's highest verbal and math scores, whether received in one exam sitting or in separate sittings. Our policy regarding the new SAT I exam is grounded in this same spirit while recognizing the flexibility required in this first year of transition. It is our intent, however, to accept only the new SAT I for those applying for Fall 2007 and beyond, even if earlier scores are reported. Regardless of these changes, we will continue to accept scores from the ACT Assessment. We
will, however, request that applicants submit the ACT with the optional writing test according to the same phase-in schedule as we have outlined above for the new SAT I.

As in the past, we will continue to recommend strongly that applicants to Stanford submit scores for three SAT II: Subject Tests. Because there will no longer be an SAT II Writing exam, we ask that applicants submit scores for two tests of the applicant's choosing plus the Math 2C exam.

I think Stanford wants Math 2c plus any other two SAT 2s (but not writing, since that's part of the SAT 1 now). I think they also don't want a Math 2c and a Math 1c as two of the three, or a language with listening and without listening as two of the three. But other than that, anything is probably okay.

You cannot apply to both Stanford and Harvard early action. You have to choose one, and apply to the other regular decision.

I don't know how much of a help this will be, but I emailed Stanford asking them about the Writing SAT II.

Question:
"I read from Stanford's website that you will accept the former SAT I scores for prospective students applying for the fall 2006. However, will you then also accept scores for the recently discontinued SAT II Writing as part of the recommended three SAT Subject Tests?"

Answer:
"Thank you for contacting the Office of Undergraduate Admission at Stanford University. Since the SAT II tests are optional, it doesnt matter what subjects you choose to take, or what scores you submit, but it would be to your advantage to send the scores of all the tests that you have taken."
