So I applied to Stanford about a month ago, and I know that it’s too late to change anything but ive been freaking out like I know most Stanford applicants are doing. On my ACT, I was not expecting the time restraints that were given (sorry, I know I shouldn’t be making excuses) and I think I flubbed on the math section. My composite score is 34, my reading is 36, English is 35, Science is 34, Writing is 10, but unfortunately my Math section is only 30, which I know is not high at all for Stanford. On the website they say they focus mostly on the Composite and English/Writing (33 for me), but how much of an effect is this bad math score going to have. On the SAT I got a 780 on the math section and in my high school I maxed out all of the math classes you can take with straight As , and I am planning on taking calculus 3 at a local college this spring. Will my bad ACT math scores have a large impact?
Can’t hurt to submit good SAT score for consideration. Test score is only one of the many factors in admission process.
Yes I did submit my superscored SAT, which was CR:680, M:780, W:760.
I was just wondering if a 30 for just one part would automatically put me out of the running for Stanford.
Your standardized test scores will never put you out of the running. Stanford looks at applications holistically and take everything into consideration. That being said, I talked to an admissions officer from Stanford and she said that once you hit the 30 range on the ACT, it doesn’t really matter if it’s 30 flat or a 36.
@afamelas Do you know if it is the same with the SAT? Did the admissions officer you talked to mention an SAT threshold or anything?
@SopheliaSavvy I don’t really remember the SAT because I never took it, but I’m fairly certain you’re supposed to shoot for a 2150+ to be competitive at Stanford.
Wait, Stanford mainly focuses on your English/Writing score? I’m similar to you OP (kind of)… I have a 35 C. 34 E, 35 M, 36 R, 35 S, BUT 31 writing with 8 essay… How much will this hurt us?
Adding onto my issue, I just read an article talking about a 700/700/700 rule for the SAT in top level schools, meaning that if one of your scores is under that than your chances decrease incredibly. This might be an issue with my 680 in CR. I hope not.
There is no hard line drawn for exclusion based on scores. The whole application is viewed in context. The school grades and test scores are viewed to see if the student has capability to succeed in the academic environment.
