Basically, how much benefit will I get towards my Stanford application acceptance chances for my father graduating from Stanford (ae relationship)? Some in-depth input is appreciated! Thanks!

I'm a legacy as well, and had the same question a while back when I applied SCEA (finding out next week!!)
This article was about as good as it got... Higher admit rate for legacies - The Stanford Daily Online.

They also send your parents a letter once you apply if you are a legacy. It basically says "don't expect an automatic acceptance, but we do value connections"

That's all I got for ya :)

i found this one too... basically telling why it is so hard to tell lol

Legacy admissions: does a family history at the Farm matter? - The Stanford Daily Online

how cool would that be to have several pages of alum connections...

I didn't get that letter this year when my daughter applied; maybe it's only for RD. She didn't put all of her relatives in...

boo. My only legacy anythings are Kent State University, Ohio State University, and Case Western Reserve University x7. Not a legitimate/helpful legacy, yet not a first generation colleger. Thanks, family!

i kid, of course, but being a legacy somewhere would be nice.

Kathyc: I applied early and received it... maybe because I applied extra early for the arts supplement?
i was under the impression all legacy families got it, as i am far from qualified enough to receive a special letter...when did your daughter apply?

We didn't get a letter for my legacy daughter either, so not sure what the algorithm is. Maybe random :)

Legacy helps if you have a strong profile, otherwise not. I know a 2-gen legacy (2 grandparents, both parents) who was not admitted but he had trouble with standardized testing so didn't have strong test scores. I also know legacies who had strong though not stellar profiles (only local recognition for ECs, low to mid-700 scores, top 20% of class) who did get in wihle non-legacies with that profile didnt.

So you've got to be pretty strong overall, then it definitely helps. Can't be quantified, though.

Volleysnap, she turned it in sometime before November 1; maybe the 30th? My father and aunt also went to Stanford, but she didn't put my aunt on the list--I assumed it could only be direct relatives. When did you get the letter?

My dad went to Stanford, so that is a direct relative, although ailey didn't get one and she is a direct relative... he sent me the email (he lives in a different state) with the letter attached on Nov 26th, so I'm assuming some time shortly before that.
i uploaded the letter to flickr if you are interested in seeing it...
Letter on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
check out the sweet typos in it :) i had a good laugh... (daughter/him/he)
let me know if you think it means anything special too! although i still don't think it does

there was another page as well, but it was basically just generic stuff about the process

Volleysnap, thank you for posting your letter. It mentioned Colleen Lim, so last night my husband (the alum) emailed her, saying he had not received the letter from Dean Shaw. She said it was a computer glitch, here's what her email said about why some got it and some did not.

Please accept my sincere apology for not sending you our alumni letter. We had a glitch in the computer system and realized at a late date that the letter did not get sent to the full alumni community.

Hope that helps other anxious worry warts!

Hi Volleysnap, thanks for the post.
And Ailey, did she say whether or not the letter was still going to come at this late date? It makes me wonder whether or not they even noted it on my daughter's application...

I don't think they are going to send a letter.

But she said my daughter's app was properly flagged, I am guessing they all were, but if you have a doubt, you should email her and get the peace of mind. The email address is on the letter volleysnap posted

Thanks Ailey. Yes, I am the nervous parent, so I e-mailed Ms. Lim and she confirmed what you said and also checked to make sure that my daughter's file was properly marked. Thanks for all of you input!

I have a double legacy through both my parents, and I didn't receive a letter either. Should I try and find out if my app was properly flagged as well?

I already emailed them about sending in a corrected transcript, could they possibly look down on me for asking twice? I'm really worried, espec. with the deadline approaching!

Shinjin, if I read the above discussion correctly, it appears that there is an email address provided in the legacy letter which is linked in post #9, and that your parents (not you) can send an email to the address listed in that letter to be sure the application is flagged, if you want. It sounds like the applications are being handled okay, that it was just that not all parents got the legacy letter; but if you are worried about it, can you ask your parents to send the email to set your mind at ease?
