Is it the same story elsewhere? I guess then that the admit rate will dip under 10% this year?

Among the Ivies +2 that announced the total applications for the class of 2010, it seems that only Harvard remained flat -actually dropped around 70 total applications. It looks like the total applications will be up 6 to 8%, depending on Cornell final numbers.

I think apps are up at all the elites. More kids applying and kids applying to more schools. In a new trend, kids are submitting multiple applications to the same school. (Just kidding, I hope).

Good one, NJres. Not sure which EC to list first? Submit two different apps! Have a couple different essays you like? Add a couple more apps! Pay the fee a few different times, keep the name and SSN the same (they probably don't bother to merge-purge), give yourself a different log-in name on the online app site and you've upped your chances! We'll turn those "lottery" schools into a true lottery yet - the more tickets, the more chances.

applications at UC's are also up. UCLA got 47,000 apps!

NJres ~ That's a devilish idea! I wonder if anyone has actually done it? It would not surprise me. Of course, if one is applying to 20 schools, I suppose one could actually lose track and do it by accident!

My extremely rough count shows about 30,000 unique applications at the dozen or so top schools that are ED or SCEA. Add another 10,000 apps. (with a correction for duplications) at another handful of top unlimited EA schools. This is a pretty sizable percentage of the total serious applicants to these top schools, since so many serious applicants are advised to apply somewhere early.

My wild guess is that the top 15 or 20 schools only get about 70,000 unique serious applicants among them. Of course, the occassional hope shot goes in.
