Stanford Chances???

I know this isnt the best place to post this but I wanted many opinions...I have an interesting case so it might be fun to go through (or not, I dont know!)

Stanford Chances...

Hi! I am a male asian junior right now from Michigan. I have a 3.76 gpa now. I have had an interesting set of courses. Freshman year: Honors Precalculus, AP Physics B, Honors Spanish, and all regular classes not including spanish which i keep moving on up in levels ( i just started at spanish 200 instead of the normal 100)
Sophomore year: AP Calculus AB with a 5 on the exam, AP Chem one semester but next semester took Honors Chem because it was too hard, spanish 300 then all reg. classes
Junior Year: AP Statistics, AP US Government, AP Economics, spanish 400, then all reg.
Senior Year: Strong classes

Test Scores: I am taking the new sat and am currently around 2300.
EC:

I am in a club called Building with Books, a charity association devoted to raising money to build a school in a developing nation. I am very involved in this club. I do about 12 hours of community service every month thru this club by teaching in an elementary school for underpriveliged kids who are below their normal grade expectations and have no real hope of catching up. I help the kids learn how to do their hw because their parents are also uneducated and cant help them out. Our building with books club is the only one in michigan that can afford to do this so we are the children's last hope. I also went to this small community that has had a bad voter turnout rate for the past few elections thru BWB and helped set up voter stands and raise voter turnout for like 8 hours one day. I helped sell season packets for the Detroit Lions through the club for community service and to help raise money. (we got part of the amount we sold). I also participated in a classroom exchange to witness how school functions in underprivileged school districts that don't have enough money to pay the teachers properly. I have done many other projects besides this. My biggest service project is gonna occur this summer. Im going to be going to Mali (fully paid by club) as a representative of my club and helping to build the school which we raise money for throughout the year. It will last 17 days and be around 200 hours of comm. serv. This is by far my main EC and something I want to pursue at college.

This summer i gave tennis lessons to little kids.
I am also on the varsity team for tennis this year but last two years on the jv team

I have been playing piano for 10 years. I practice 14 hours a week.

I had also been out of 2000 nominated to join the US Physics Olympiad team, which test i took in my freshman year but did not get in (to the team).

I want to major in business and engineering.

Recs should be no problem.

I also took summer school in the summer before my sophomore year at an advanced program for "academic scholors" at University of Michigan and a summer school program in the summer before my freshman year at Northwestern. I took a number theory class at U of M and a precalculus class at Northwestern that helped me prepare for precalc honors freshman year.

I am also in the process of starting an FBLA chapter in my school with a friend, which is going to be really cool!

Based on these circumstances, what do u rate my chances of getting into Stanford EA? BTW, I dont technically have a legacy but my dad knows some professors at Stanford (he attended for postdoc) and my friend's uncle is a prof. there whom I might meet. Not sure if this will help.

Thanks for reading all this stuff! What are my chances, anyone?

Standford is reach. I'm telling you that, since it is for EVERYONE.

nothing really sets you apart from most asians who apply to standford. Maybe, that one EC might, but don't fully depend on it.

Also, don't worry about dropping down to honors chem because it was too hard. It shows you take initiative, and know when something is too hard for you. This shows that you know how to make a judgement on what is right for your pace, not like a fool who just sits thorugh it so it "looks good"

Don't worry, and I wish you luck.

anyone else?

It should definitely be considered a reach school, because to be frank, your GPA is too low, and your EC's arent too spectacular. I'd give it a 10-25% chance. You really should apply to USC, Berkeley, UCLA, and a few other cal schools.

Well I thought you had pretty good ECs..if you don't..then mine suck horribly. You took some really hard classes all during your high school years..so that may set you out a little..maybe..cuz I haven't heard of any freshman in my life taking physics. Try to get a great SAT score and work hard on that GPA..and I think you'll be fine..you took some pretty hard classes so that probably explains the low GPA. I think you have a good chance.

Im getting some contradictory opinons. Some ppl think my ec's are good and others think they're not so good. In my opinion, my biggest ec is building with books and the trip to mali. What do you guys think???

hey tennispro (or anyone else) how is it that a freshman takes 3 AP classes, let alone one? Here in suburban Atlanta, and pretty much everywhere else I have been to, students don't start taking AP classes until Junior year.

how come so many asians play the piano or the violin....no one plays the artsy instrument of the whistle or of banging on garbage cans...whats up with THAT, i mean its art! jk...
umm i think u may be deffered EA, but maybe you have about a 60% chance regular .

Lol....I know an asian girl who plays french horn, does that make her different in any way? :)

I agree, every single asian I know has at least 10+ years experiance on piano or violin. It's become too common to adcoms now.

LOL guys, im not really relying on piano to get me in. Im mostly involved in FBLA and Building with Books (volunteer service). Ive done lots of hours (hundreds of QUALITY hours).

I think it's unfair to say he has nothing that sets him apart from the average Asian applicant at Stanford. The OP seems to be genuinely motivated to do make a difference in the community. I think that should come across in his application.

GPA is okay. It's in really tough classes, so I think it will be looked upon pretty favorably. SAT's are strong. if you show great initiative throughout the rest of high school, I think you've got a good shot. It's a reach for anyone, but still, you seem to be relatively well-qualified.

Joey

another asian tennis musician

anyone else???

lol i'm the stereotypical asian tennis violinist (actually indian but indians are asians too)

lol ok. Does anyone have any opinions on my chances or what I should improve on?

improve your GPA

thanks anyone else?

when u say ur sat is around 2300 which test are u referring to (pr, kaplan, or 8 reals). Just curious cause I'm scoring around a 2100 on the new sat on the pr test and I got a 1520 on the old sat.

the new 8 real book
