I did a year long independent research project my junior year. This last summer I served as an intern for three weeks at Stanford for Cardiothoracic surgery. I was invited back by the head scientist at Stanford/medical school teacher to do research at Stanford for four more weeks. He wrote a rec letter for me. Hope that helps?

@NosyCaliparent If you don’t mind me asking, do you know why your son was accepted? I’m sure he had excellent grades and extracurriculars but do you know what really tipped him over into the ‘accepted’ pile?
I like reading through previous Stanford results threads just to see what I share in common with those who are accepted and to try and notice if there are any subtle patterns in admissions.

@pooka3000 Glad I’m not the only one! If Stanford doesn’t tweet out when the results are coming out tomorrow, I don’t know what I’ll do! Honestly, I don’t think I will be able to hold myself together if I have to wait one more week. Waiting + finals is definitely not a good combination.
@pommey1 I hope that the rec letter from Stanford faculty matters. My DD attended Summer College there and did research at a Stanford Lab.

Should I list Stanford as my top college choice for NMSC? I applied REA so I assume decisions are made and this won’t matter, but my top choice is USC right now as Stanford doesn’t offer discounts. I just don’t know if making Stanford my top choice would help my chances in any way.

I think, by applying REA, you already showed them, Stanford is your top choice.
@Oscardinho NMSC is the national merit scholarship corporation for top scorers on the PSAT. Not sure if they report my top choice to colleges.
@shamwow1 I suggest keep USC as first choice. They offer discounted tuition to NMS. There is a plenty of time to make changes. My DD has it undecided for now.

@shamwow1 You have until May 1 to decide with NMSC as far as I know. You can call them. It is the colleges who match the scholarship with NMSC.
