Stanford Class of 2021 Applicant Discussion

I’m from Princeton, NJ (like the University). I’m applying REA

Hey do you guys think it’s okay to be using a bullet-point/list-style response for the “Short Questions” section—especially for the questions about favorite books/artists, favorite newspapers/magazines, and favorite performances/exhibits? I realize they permit us not to use complete sentences, but exactly how minimal can I go? I want to cram in as much info as possible!

@njk345 hm as far as i know is what most people did was choose one or two for each category and use extra words to explain why. it can give more insight on you as a person rather than if you just list a bunch of random books and stuff

@njk345 I did list-style, no extra explanations, and I got in. I really don’t think it matters too much

I explained only some int he magazines, nespapers and websites section, but I didn’t explain any of the books, authors, etc. I don’t think it would matter if you don’t though.

Okay cool, it seems more fun to go for a big list anyways:)

I don’t know if anyone is interested in rankings. Here is another one.

What exactly does Stanford mean by “intellectual vitality”?

Stanford requires all test scores supposedly, but I was reading the previous results thread and I noticed that some people commented under SAT 2 that they didn’t submit their lower scores. Is this allowed? What do you think is the lowest score on the SAT 2’s that you can submit without hurting your application? REA by the way.

@ingramkobe I would suggest reporting all your scores. Even if the older ones are lower, it shows that you’ve improved. That’s what I did. Just submitted my application. Good luck to everyone else!

@vasodys thanks! how about a 700 in bio? didn’t study at all but did so much better on the math tests

For places like Stanford, character probably plays a big role in the application process, so if they ask for everything, I’d say give them everything. I’m not sure if they can find out about it, but if they do, they probably won’t like being lied to. My school has a UK-based education system, so I did A-Levels and I got a C for one of them. I trust that my honesty about it in the application will be in my favor.

You can choose which SAT II scores to send (since they are only recommended) but you must send all SAT I or ACT scores.

Question about teacher rec. Know that the college is looking for Math/Humanities from later years. D has Junior Math teacher who likes her but her 9th grade Math teacher has a much closer relationship with her. She has been volunteering in her class for the past 3 years and has a great rapport with this teacher which would result in a much more complete LOR. What have other students done, can one reach out to the admissions office and see if they will allow her to use the 9th grade teacher and attach the junio

… the ability to understand what intellectual vitality means on its face.

Quick question for those who applied early admission last year – how did they notify you? Email or letter? Also, did they notify on Dec 15th? I see articles on line saying Dec 11th (which was the Friday prior). I am wondering because we have a trip planned around this time but don’t want to miss the notification.

@TryntoFigureOut you could use the 9th grade teacher as the 3rd optional recommender, so you have both the complete recommendation as well as the 2 required ones

@kath00 after peeking through last year’s forum I saw that they were released on the 11th last year. I read somewhere that they typically release them on the second friday of December, which would be the 9th this year. Be sure to follow their twitter around that time when they announce when the decision will be released. I have a trip planned too from the 14th to the 16th and I don’t want to spend it on my phone xD

@kath00 we did in fact find out on the 11th last year, it seems they always say Dec 15 but tend to release it on the Friday before the 15th. The decision is officially released on your portal (you’ll get sign-in info for this after you submit your app). If you don’t check your portal soon after the decision release (within 24 hours, I think) then they send you an email as a heads up that decisions are out and you should check the portal for your result.

@vasodys : Thank You
