Stanford class selection?

So as an incoming freshman I was wondering how do Stanford students select their classes, do you guys just go off word of mouth or is ther like a shopping period or something? I've heard of colleges letting students visit classes for a couple days or so to see if they like the class, does Stanford do anything like that. And what do you do if you end up in an impossible class or something? sorry that's alot of questions lol

There’s a generous shopping period. Add and drop deadlines aren’t until three weeks into the quarter. Of course, the shopping period is realistically only a week or so, since if you join a class later than that, you’ll be pretty far behind. Usually, I pick one or two more classes than I actually intend to take, shop them all, and then drop one or two after a week or two.

For at least your first quarter (and for however long you need it after that), your advisor will help you pick out classes as well.
