Stanford/Columbia

This is purely hypothetical. But in the future I would really like to attend either Stanford or Columbia law. I'm just trying to gauge how competitive admissions to these schools is.

Info:

Undergrad: Duke University
Economics Major, Psychology Minor
GPA: 3.74 (law school calculation out of 4.3)
LSAT: 170

Other relevant info: economics tutor, a couple research internships and one corporate finance internship, LSE study abroad

Do I have a good shot? If anyone knows the numbers, what are the mean GPA/LSAT for incoming class in these schools?

Out at Stanford. Weak shot at CLS. Weak/OK shot at NYU.

What would the GPA/LSAT target be to improve my chances at these schools?

You have a 25 to 37 percent chance of being admitted to either at the present moment.

The medians are:

Stanford: 3.85, 170
Columbia: 3.70, 172

GPA will be difficult for you to improve. Let’s ignore that.

For a 50-50 shot at Columbia, get a 171/Stanford, get a 172.

You need a 174 to be competitive for Columbia, 176 for Stanford.

176 will cinch it for Columbia, 178 for Stanford.

Eh… the whole 172 for a 50/50 at Stanford thing I just don’t buy. In my experience, they care about the GPA. I think anything lower than a 3.8 makes it really hard to get in. That’s just my opinion, though.

If those stats are correct in #4, you wouldn’t want yours below those averages unless you are a URM or “non-traditional”.

Really? Because my numbers were below them for SLS, and I was admitted. I am neither a URM, nor was I a non-trad.

Typically, being in the bottom quartile is URM territory. Being just below the means/medians, though, isn’t bad at all.

i dont think any LSAT will clinch stanford:

if you really do get a stratospheric LSAT of 178+ though, Harvard would be a really good shot.

^^You misunderstood. What I meant was he would want to beat those averages to have “a good shot”.
