Unrelated to rest of Post: also could you suggest other Strong Engineering schools that would be less of a reach than Stanford

I know im a reach to get into Stanford but do you think i have a better/worse chance than 17% of getting in (basically im asking if im better than the average EA applicant(rejected or accepted). I know its a reach so dont tell me that please : ) any sort of guesses number wise would be great(ie 1%, 30% etc)

Im from a top South Carolina Public Highschool ( I know this doesnt mean much seeing as it is south carolina were talking about)

SATs Math 740 CR 730 Writing 680
SATII Chem 780 MathII 720

AP
Euro 5
Chem 5
Senior Aps
Gov, Econ, BC calc, English

ECs:
*Student Leader in Youth Group been planning/ leading events, Bible studies, teaching sunday school etc. for all of highschool.
*4 year varsity Polevaulter
*Week long mission trip has turned into Monthly mentoring program with low income children in a neighboring city for past 2 years.
*Humanitarian trips to aid Haitian refugees outside Nassau and to help children of Migrant workers in a neighboring city (the mentoring thing)
*Materials Science and Engineering Research program at Clemson University.

Essays:
*about competing in my first triathlon
*about my interest in quantum physics/materials science
*about my church leadership roles
*about my research experience at Clemson

My Hook: I wanna major in Materials Science(small major) im writing an essay about intellectual excitement about how my experience in the Materials science research combined with an intrest in modern physics lead me to be very excited about materials science and engineering.

My Reflection: Compared to other peoples posts my stats are crap and so are my AP's number wise, i havent won anything or recieved awards so im giving myself about 15% to get into Stanford EA.

O yeah kinda forgot that.
Its like 4.6 weighted (doubt that means much) i think unwieghted my average grade is around 95/100
Im ranked 10ish/600ish
I had an very good Junior year grade wise (all honors unless AP)
English 95 ; Pre-Cal 95 ; AP Chem 98 ; Physics 100 ; Computer Programing 100; US History 98 ; Engineering 97

You're pretty much like every single CCer who applied to Stanford stat-wise, meaning, damn good. Though you're GPA is pretty damn high. And your ECs are really cool.

You have a great shot--just write some killer essays and get those recs in.

you know, there is a "chances" forum. you might get a better response there.

ooo thats helpful, i thought the Top Forums list was the entire forums list, sorry for the oversight.

GPA, SAT, EC's are all solid but nothing appears spectacular (in the context of a highly talent Stanford applicant pool). South Carolina might be a bit of a boost. The EA acceptance rate for "unhooked" applicants is likely around 10%. I'd say you have a slightly better chance than average.

At this point in the game, my best advice for you is to retake the SAT. A score in the 2300 range will likely double your odds (to perhaps 25%).

At this point i dont think i could do that and still apply EA, would the chance of posibly increasing my SAT be enough to overide the fact that applying EA would help overcome my lower SAT score? (saw some pretty impressive stats in a book about early decicion showing that with my specific scores applying early would basically double my chances at Stanford).

i say you have exactly 17%. while everything is going great for you, your standardized test scores arent the best. for most top engineering schools many applicants will have 800s on the math, chem, and physics SATIIs so you are down there. also, stanford applicants will have atleast 2250 (750 each section) and many times over 2300. the thing about EA and ED with schools is that there is more self selection than in RD and you will be going against a stronger pool (which is why the admit rates are higher early). however, scores will not get you into a school and not keep you out either. that is why i give you an equal % chance as the rest of the field because you probably are just as strong as people with much better SAT scores based on your ECs and stuff.

also, try looking at penn state, michigan, carnegie mellon, maryland, and georgia tech as possible schools incase you dont get into stanford EA (they may also give you scholarshio money if you raise your SAT scores)

Cool so it looks like i got a legitimate chance (yet small) at my dream school (if i write some very good essays) and now i just need to concentrate on what school i will more realistically go to. Thanks for all of the replies everyone

You have no hook. Hooks are things that bring major recognition to the school or fill a rare nitch for the school. Majors have no weight in admissions because most students change majors at least once.

Yeah i realized that i really dont have a hook- not sure why i tried to claim i did, i cant edit the orginal post tho
