Stanford Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission

Folks:
My daughter got deferred. Do you happen to know the stats on the chance to get admitted if one gets deferred ?
Congrats to the ones who are admitted, and best wishes to the ones who are not. There are so many other great opportunities beyond Stanford. I did not get admitted to Stanford Graduate school Engineering program but later was able to do it through a program it offers my company.
Good luck to all

I have the same feeling, my three nephew and nieces didnā€™t get in as well. Iā€™ve heard from other students who applied to Cornell EA didnā€™t get in. Itā€™s a tough year! But life has to continue

Current Stanford mom here. Congrats on the deferral. Stanford does not defer a huge number of students from early action to regular decision like some universities do. Your child actually really does have a shot at admission during regular decision. I have seen the numbers posted before, but donā€™t remember specifically enough to post hereā€”but you can probably find the stats on REA deferreds being admitted. My D who is a junior (so was admitted in a ā€œregularā€ admission cycle pre-Covid) knows several students that were initially deferred and later got in during RD.

Hello,

When I applied last year to Stanford, I was not deferred but rather extended waitlisted and ultimately rejected. Since your daughter was deferred she has a greater chance and a letter of continued interest is always an option.

So did you apply as a transfer student? If so, how did you add to your previous profile?

I applied to colleges last year but due to personal challenges, I decided it was best to apply to in-state colleges. Stanford allows for an extra short essay where you can talk about the experiences youā€™ve had since your last application.

Son got in! Yahoo. So happy for him. One other person from his school was admitted REA and the rest denied. Sigh. It has been a tough year for all schools, it seems. Making ACT/SAT optional I think has really made the application numbers to top universities skyrocket. Best to all of you who are still applying. My tip as a parent seeing this process now twice: focus on the essays ā€“ even the 50 word supplements! They are hugely important and are the only way to let oneā€™s personality and goals shine through. Every word counts! Oh, and we were told that if you can submit a portfolio, do so. It is the difference between getting in and not making enough of an effort to be seriously considered. Doesnā€™t matter how great you are (or not) at something. It can hurt to blow that off, esp in the arts (music, dance, art).

Also, to the person who was deferred ā€“ wait till the last week or so that the supplemental form is due and SEND ONE IN. No matter what. Give any and all updates (good grades, any new accomplishments or awards, publications, etc). The reason to wait is to try to get more of these accolades under oneā€™s belt before submitting the update. We were told that form is hugely important and not at all optional like Stanford makes it seemā€¦

Someone also told us that it would be ok to say in the form that Stanford is your #1 choice at that point too. Not sure if that is right or wrong but I would imagine that cannot hurt, since they like to admit people who will definitely commit to the school they are admitted to. I think in general very few people are deferred at Stanford so there is a really good chance you can get in when they compare you to the ā€œregular applicant poolā€ in the Spring. So the more you stand out, the better. Also not sure about how they handle the interviews. But if you didnā€™t get an interview in the REA round, ask for one and practice so that it goes really well.

Hope all this helps!

@kath00 can I ask who told you that not submitting an arts supplement hurts you?

College counselor at the high school. Said that if they are choosing between equal applicants (equal grades and types of involvement in extracurricular), they will look for the applicant who took the time to submit a portfolio. Itā€™s so competitive that even making that small effort seems to be important and shows that you care about the school. Obviously not everyone submits and not all areas have portfolios (ie STEM usually doesnt) but if you are in the arts, that seems to be important.

Congratulations C19!!!

Your background is so impressive that your brief email itself was good enough to be considered for admission. I am sure you will do very well at the farm. All the best!

I am sure your son will go on accomplishing great things, and will achieve his own dreams!!

As many said, admission to Stanford does not define your child, and there are many great schools out there where your child thrive!!

All the best!

My daughter too was accepted after a deferral. She didnā€™t have too many new accomplishments to boast about, but she did talk about her plans for participating in an intensive language program at a university abroad during a gap year so that she could apply the improved language skills to her research project at Stanford. An AO specifically mentioned those gap year plans in her welcome note, so I think it might have tipped the scale.
