Does anyone know of a nice place to eat dinner in Palo Alto or San Francisco? Not too expensive but not cheap. A nice place to take family and relatives while we are there.

Most of the restaurants I can think of are ethnic. For Indian food, everybody goes crazy over Darbar; but since that’s a really popular restaurant, it’ll probably have a lot of people in it around NSO, so you might try out Janta (which I prefer over Darbar for Indian food). If you want to try something less predictable, Rangoon is a really good Burmese/Chinese food restaurant - delicious food at a decent price. Really nice people, too.

Of course, the “default” is the Cheesecake Factory on University Ave, but I’d recommend you stay away from there during NSO: it will be absurdly packed with students and their families - we’re talking 2-hour waits.

I always like the restaurants on Castro Street. They range from cheap to mid-level, mostly Asian (Thai, Chinese, Sushi), although they do have a mexican place or two and pizzerias. I always go to Maruichi for the ramen, although this might be too cheap. If you haven’t ever tried Boba (or if you like Boba), I highly recommend Verde Tea Cafe for dessert. I always get the honeydew/melon Boba. Out of this world.

For something closer to Stanford, a lot of people recommend Buca di Beppo, an Italian place off of University Avenue. I have only had their catering, but it was really good.

^ I’ve been to Buca di Beppo. It was “eh” but then again, I like authentic American pizza, not that Italian crap. :p

Agreed on the boba and Verde (taro is delicious). Except I’d recommend not getting the tapioca balls (which are gross IMO).

I like Rice Thai Cuisine. It’s spicier than most!

Thanks so much!!! They all sound delicious!! Can’t wait. Someone also told me about MacArthur Park. Has anyone heard of this place?

What? Who eats Boba without tapioca balls? Heresy!

Just kidding. :-)

I’ve eaten there - amazing food + it’s in a very old, historic building. The problem of course is that it’s rather expensive - ‘fine dining’ if that’s what you want. Yelp puts its price rating at $$$, which means $31-60. (The only higher rating is $$$$, which is $60+). I’ve only been once though, as my adviser was paying for it. I’m too cheap to eat there otherwise. :)

It’s true, I guess I don’t enjoy boba, just bubble tea and the flavors. It’s fun to save the boba for the end and then shoot them out of the straw. They stick to everything. :p

+1 :D

There are also places like the Olive Garden and Chili’s. If you like Japanese and sushi, there’s a nice place called “Sura Sushi”. We’ve also been to Mings Chinese Restaurant and it’s pretty good. We heard that “Stacks” is a great place for breakfast, though haven’t been there yet.
