Stanford EPGY Online High School

I think other gifted kids don't have to study at school :)

OMG! Some kids are toooooooo smart to be kids. lol

Indiana U. High School:

Unfortunately we live out of the States, otherwise we will have another option:
UC Berkeley Extension Online: http://explore.ucxonline.berkeley.edu/highschool/body_hscourses.html

OK, thanks for the links!

I just called Indiana U and they just started AP this year, so they cannot post an AP scores track record. They did tell me that when they do get scores, they will not be posted. :(

Though they were not APs, my daughter took distance dual-credit history classes at Indiana several years ago--she thought they were excellent. Professors were great and took her calls or got back to her. Interesting and challenging primary and secondary source reading.

Thanks for the info, Coasting.

i was going to do Stanford EPGY this year for english and math as well as my regular school, but i decided against it because i was too busy with sports and regular homework. my friend does it and his workload is really intense, as well as the grading being very difficult.

I just got admitted into EPGY OHS...but now comes the financial aid app...which is extremely frustrating for an international student like me who needs to translate everything from Thai to English for the admissions committee.

Feel like this is going to be harder than writing all the application essays =P

Hey, congratulations. The school is hard, no doubt about it, but it is worth it. Good luck next year.

How do EPGY Core courses compare to AP or IB HL courses. I was wondering what you meant by "hard" - as in lots more work, higher grading standards, or greater breadth/depth of content?

Thanks for the reply =)

Wait, how do you do an online biology class?

You can cover all of the theoretical content online. But I think that EPGY OHS has a summer lab course for AP Chem and Bio so that students also get to do the experiments.

The core courses are harder than the AP courses, IMO. That's because they are hybrid: political science, government, and philosophy courses. They are very difficult to get your mind around, and if my daughter hadn't taken AP US History in 9th grade, I think she might have been sunk.

We had to kind of bug the teacher to figure out what she could do to get her grade up - currently an "A". She had to do some outside reading in a book called "Reading and Writing Philosophy", and do all the exercises in the book. We only found out about this book after talking to the teacher a couple of times.

Originally all of the AP Bio lab work was to be done during a summer session. However, the teacher (again, I must say the world's best AP Bio teacher - she must be!) had the students do all of the lab work during class this year. So if you had a hard time paying for a summer session (like we do), all of your lab work would be taken care of.

The students did half of their work using an online virtual lab, and the other half of the labs were done by using science/dissection kits that you used at home, and sending in digital pictures and completing lab reports.

AP bio lab work is still available during the summer if you'd like to do much more in depth work.

I also think that the grading in the class is especially tough - not for the faint hearted.

Ryanone, just out of curiosity what do your children do outside of school to interact with other kids? EPGY OHS sounds amazing, but I don't know if I could go without seeing my friends everyday.

Well their best friend lives down the street, but besides that, they see their friends at indoor/outdoor soccer, friends at church on Sundays and Wednesdays, friends at art classes, and homeschool/regular friends whenever they want to get together. I guess that's about it.

I would say that with their non-profit, and volunteering at multiple places, they are increasingly spending more time with adults than they used to, but I guess that's to be expected.

Once submitted, how much time does it take for OHS to get back on the fin aid application?

FA info comes around the time of your acceptance into the program
